Adding more fish

Hi

I added 8 ember tetras to my newly fishless cycled tank almost 2 weeks ago - there was an offer to buy 4 at a time.  I remember Sue said I could add another 2 once my tank was more 'mature'.  When would that be?

I've been checking the water - both ammonia & nitrites have been zero since the fish have been present.

Thanks

After two weeks you'll be fine to get more now. As a rule of thumb, you can get more fish when your ammonia and nitrite have been zero for a week after the last additions. If you are sensible about the numbers you add in one go you shouldn't see a reading above zero for either of them.

If you have 8 embers, strictly speaking you can get 2.6 at the next addition - ie a third of what you have at the moment. Round it up to 3. However, if the offer is still on and you are prepared to monitor the water a couple of times a day for the next couple of days, and do water changes if necessary, get 4.

Well they had that offer on again to buy 4 so I now have 12 teeny weeny ember tetras in my tank.  They're swimming about together.

So should I check the water 2-3 times/day for a few days?  Just to make sure it doesn't change too much with more fish?  It's due for a partial water change on Sunday anyway.

Thanks

Ember Tetras are amongst my favourite fish. I intend to have a school of at least 20 in my 240L tank!

For the first day, check morning and evening, then you can go to once a day till you are sure the ammonia & nitrite levels are not going to show a blip. If you don't see any rise at all in either of them three or four days will be more than enough.
If you do see a blip in either, do a water change and continue monitoring.

Thanks Sue!  The fish have been in 24 hours & I tested the water now.  Nitrite = 0, pH = 7.6 and ammonia = 0.25  so ammonia has sneaked up from a consistent 0.  I've done a partial water change & I'll check again in the morning.

You might find that although you have a small blip in ammonia you don't see any nitrite, but keep an eye out just the same. You had enough bacteria for 8 embers and added another 4 but there aren't quite enough bacteria for the waste of 12 fish. There is a sudden increase in the amount of ammonia which builds up slightly until the bacteria have multiplied enough to cope with the new ammonia production. But nitrite at first remains the same as there are the same number of bacteria making it, and it slowly increases as the increasing numbers of the ammonia eaters make it. The nitrite eaters often keep pace with the slow increase of nitrite.
