If anybody needs some let me know. 5-10 would give you enough to start your own colony, they live with the shrimps so wont have anything that will affect fish health.
You just need to pay for postage which is whatever a first class stamp costs now days.

Wonder if I could use snails in my community tank Fiona, any advice since you know what I'm looking at putting in it? I hear snails are brilliant algae eaters?

OH :fishy1: i would love a pair in my new tank (see my thread) when its set up. will they eat cory eggs?

I'm almost certain that a company needs to be DEFRA-registered to transport livestock, and that APC Overnight is the only courier service in the UK which does this. I remember learning/reading of this last May when they stopped couriering for a few days; if I can find relevant info, I'll post it.

Im not a company and neither was the ebay seller I bought my original 10 from :) They're fine in a community tank Paddy, they spend most of the time under the substrate, they're great for preventing gas pockets forming and yes they do eat algae but not as much as nerites. When your tank has finished cycling pm me and I'll send you some.

Sorry, Fiona, what I meant but didn't word very well (apologies) was that a courier/posting company needs to be DEFRA-registered, and APC Overnight is the only one which is ie Royal Mail cannot send livestock.

I imagine, that as MTS are very inexpensive to produce (ie. they breed like rabbits and it's all you can do to give them away! :rotfl: ) the cost of using a registered courier would be a bit prohibitive.
FWIW I received my MTS via Royal Mail and have sent them via Royal Mail too.

Very kind, many thanks. I'm not bothered receiving them via royal mail. It's not as if you need to put live animals on the package... Just fragile should suffice :)

Agreed! I'm glad I have mine, I just need to thin out the population every once in a while. Even the Assassin Snails can't keep up. :rotfl:

I chucked some in the 200l a while back but have yet to notice a population building in there. I think I've too many assassins.

How many Assassins do you have? I have 4 in my tank and the MTS are winning that battle. :)

I've no idea, probably 30 plus, I have had them for a very long time though and although they breed slowly they do multiply. I've only got them in the 200l. I didnt want them in the shrimpery because I'm hoping I can breed enough tadpole snails to feed my sons puffers a treat every now and then.

I think I shall have to increase my population of Assassins eventually. :))

I put 2 assassins in my 125L to eliminate my "hitchhiker" pond snails. It took them about 6 months to accomplish the task, which they eventually did with the help of their tiny offspring, who could get into the narrow gaps behind the Juwel filter etc.. The parents didn't seem too interested in the very small snails. Wanting to add Zebra Nerites to the tank to control an algae outbreak, I decided to set up a cycled, but unfiltered "QT" for the assassins. I eventually transferred 27 snails to the QT!
Obviously I was "lucky" to buy a pair. It took 2 or 3 months before I spotted a baby - rumour has it that they hide in the substrate for a while - or, maybe , I need to visit Specsavers again!

I've had 4 nerites in the 200l with the assassins for over a year and I added 3 yellow apple snails, I've seen the nerites just sail over the assassins, I do however make sure there's extra food added for all the snails.
And yes, if you sifted through your sand you'd find a lot of baby assassins, the lurk in the substrate
