Just sharing my new shrimp adventure

Had first fish in the cycled tank for a few weeks (1 blue gourami & 3 guppies) and to stop me buying more fish too soon... I bought shrimp!! I bought 2 red & 2 blue (not thinking I'd be successful enough to worry about interbreeding)
They initially all mooched about the first day so I was surprised to find they all hide constantly! Although I am down to 3 as one of the blues died the day after getting them. I'm obviously trying to keep tabs on the others but boy do they hide!!
Think I have been through all the newbie scares! Found an empty shell and thought that was another gone but realised it was a molt!  Then today I found the blue one I haven't see for 3 days in/on my interpet CF filter! I had added extra sponge filter material to the front to stop shrimp getting in but he seems to like sitting on it!! I tried to scoot him back in the tank but he scuttled back in the filter sharpish! I am worried that I will lose him tomorrow on clean out day as I try to get the acrobat back in the tank!
Now just one left to locate, I cant easily move the ornament I hope he is hiding in but id like to see him. If I can keep these happily for a few weeks I might get a couple more!!

That sounds like typical shrimps  ;D

The reason the one of them likes sitting on the sponge is because it collects food. Bits of uneaten food getting stuck in the sponge, micro-organisms on the sponge etc. Before I closed down my 50 litre and moved the shrimps to my big tank, I had a knee high sock over the filter grill and there were always a lot of shrimps grazing on it.

Hiding is self protection for shrimps, you only really them a lot in shrimp only tanks. I have to admit that I see a lot fewer shrimps in the big tank because there are more fish that will eat them. But I do see a fair few especially in the plants.

Yes, and as the tank is new its not full of plants to hide in, the plants I have are growing though!! (and Mr. Gourami has a favourite he loves to uproot  >:( )  Think they are quite safe in the filter as long as they don't get trapped or use it to throw themselves out of the tank!

On another note, checked my wtr prior to change in morning; nitites= 0    nitrates ~10ppm so that's me happy

Was going to put ceramic rings in space in CF but not sure shrimp will like that occupying their spot?! (2 are in there now)
