Can I hope that Tiger Barbs might ignore shrimp?

I have 6 small Tigers and 6 Pigmy Corys.

I will be getting a dozen Cardinal Tetras, six Cherry Barbs, three Clown Loach and six Galaxy Rasbora.

According to the Community Creator "Tiger Barb may attack shrimp"
None of the other species are showing as a threat to the shrimp.

My tank is fairly heavily planted with lots of hiding places.

So my question, bearing in mind my Tigers are still small at present; about 2.5cm, and with lots of places for the shrimp to hide, can I risk adding some of the deep red shrimps I've seen in my LFS?

Of course I know the Tigers will soon grow, but I'm wondering if they become accustomed to the food I provide, and the shrimp can keep out of their way, is there a chance the Tigers might not decide to eat the shrimps?

Naturally, if you guys tell me it's a silly idea I'll drop it, but if you think it's something I could try then I'd want to learn about shrimp and see if they will work in my community.

Given the reputation of tiger barbs, I wouldn't risk them with shrimps I'm afraid.

To change the subject, clown loaches need to be kept in a bigger shoal than three and in a 6 foot plus tank. They are big fish. If you are talking about the 120 litre in your signature, the only loaches suitable are dwarf chain loaches (Botia/Yasuhikotakia/Ambastaia sidthimunki. Their name has changed twice!) or the rosy loach

OK. Thanks Sue I'll think again.

I had planned to get the clowns and then take them back to LFS when they got too large, but this plan was formulated before I'd actually put any fish in.

Now, I can see that I'd not want to part with anyone.

Is it just me or do I hear the whisperings of an excuse for a second tank?  :)

:rotfl: Hahaha, if only I had the room!  ;D

Mind you, I do have a tiny little tank we picked up on a whim at a car boot sale... I wonder if 15 litres is too small for a little shrimpery ... ?

15 litres, a small heater, a sponge filter and a few shrimps - sounds like a good idea  ;D

That sounds like a nice little project for the autumn, once my main tank is complete (or nearly complete) :)

That's exactly what I did a few months back and the tank fits quite nicely next to my monitor.  :)

I shall have to start hinting to Marina ... perhaps I can tell her it will double up as a nursery in case any of the fish in the main tank have babies ...
Actually is that a possibility? Could I transfer eggs and/or fry into a shrimp tank to grow on ?

It is a possibility provided that the fry aren't from very big fish and that they are moved on fairly quickly. Big fish have fry that grow big quickly, and even small fish's fry need space to grow properly.

I've got fry in my shrimp tank, mind you it wasn't done deliberately, the eggs were on some java moss I transferred from my main tank. The fry are tiny though; initially 2-3mm in length, the first hatching will be big enough soon to go in a fry nursery in the main tank. They're so delicate looking though and I'm a bit nervous about transfering them.
