Hi everyone, I have never seen anything about Apple Snails on here, but that doesn't mean of course that no-one has talked about them, just that I haven't seen it. A friend has two of these, and they have just laid some eggs. We are wondering now what conditions are required for them to hatch, how long it takes for them to hatch, etc. Can anyone advise please.

The reason you don't see much talk about them is because the EU banned the import of them a few years ago. There are still some around; it isn't illegal to sell them, just to import them.
The best thing I can do is point you towards a specialist apple snail website. This (http://applesnail.net/) is one of the best sources on apple snails. Look under 'care' and reproduction is at the bottom of that page.

Hi Sue, Thanks for your reply, I know they were not allowed to import them, but these were bred by our local fish shop, the owner of which has been keeping fish for many years. I appreciate your reply, and for the links which have been very helpful and interesting. Cheers.

I was in a shop the other day and they had a tank full of yellow apple snails. We still need to know how to care for them in the UK as some shops do have them in.

I think I have read somewhere that Apple Snails are amphibious. Perhaps they are "escape artists"?

They are escape artists. I do wonder if this is because they lay eggs above the water line so it is in their nature to wander. Then they climb over the edge of the tank crawl down the outside and can't find their way back. Maybe!

They are very entertaining, and keep the glass beautifully clean. Don't think they have tried to escape yet, but they have laid a few eggs above the water line.
