I use that too.

Have you come across the Practical Fishkeeping article on this subject? There's a link to it in here

That article agrees. It says that anaesthetic overdose is the best method and clove oil is the easiest anaesthetic to get hold of.

well actually i have heard that the fastest and most painless way is to get some super cold water like ice water and put them in it then if they are still alive after a minute get some super hot boiling water and put them in it.i dont do this i do it another way.

Gosh Brian!! i think any fish is euthanased the way you have mention would be quite glad to be dead. That is probably the cruelest way of doing it I have heard!!!!  i know you don't do this by the way so dont think i'm having a go at you.  ;)

I have what is rather distastefully known as the walloping rock in the garden.  Not nice but quick.  :(

Anyone thinking about a different method should read this. It goes through the various methods in use and says why some of them are a really bad idea.
The conclusion at the end states the only acceptable method is anaesthesia overdose preferably followed by destruction of the brain to make sure.

Which actually isn't too bad  :-\

As long as the fish is out of water for the shortest time possible and he kills it with the first stroke, it is an acceptable method for large fish.
Being quick reduces the stress the fish suffers, and taking several attempts, injuring the fish but not quite killing it, is cruelty.

I have a bottle of clove oil in my 'fish cabinet' just in case the worst happens. I know though that I am much more likely to go for the 'sit and wait' and hope a fish gets better... as sometimes you never know and I'd hate to think I'd killed a fish unnecessarily. But in reality most of the time it probably would have been better if I'd put a fish down that I thought was on its last 'legs'. Just out of interest, how do most of you dispose of your dead fish?

I put them in the bin.

And before anyone says anything about diseases leaching out of landfill into the water table, our rubbish is incinerated.
Not that a disease would be viable by the time it got to the water table.

I dont usually have any remans if I've used the rock.

If they die naturally i wrap them in kitchen towel and put them in the bin.

I use the clove oil approach as well - I have a kind of home made euthanasia kit (which sounds really macabre but having it ready means I can avoid prolonging any suffering in the unfortunate event that a fish is past the point of recovery). It consists of a plastic tub (with lid) for the actual euthanasia process, a small pipette for drawing the clove oil, a small glass jar (with lid) for emulsifying it and obviously the oil itself.  :(

So do I.
A margarine tub for the actual process; a small screwtop plastic bottle for mixing; an old medication pipette for measuring drops and a pair of rubber gloves to keep the smell off my hands. They all live in the back of the greenhouse.

I've just had to do this using emulsified clove oil and I was quite suprised how fast it worked. I'm going to leave her for a couple of hours just to make sure she's really gone
