Title: Weird FaceBook feed from my LFS
Post by: adenann on June 01, 2017, 10:20:04 PM

I've been out and about all day.  Just logged on to check messages and stuff, then spotted this in my FaceBook feed from one of my LFS.

No wonder it's had 3M views and rising.

I can't make up my mind if it's cruel or just weird.

I saw it yesterday too on the magazine Practical Fishkeeping's page. I find it neither cruel nor weird - I think it highlights how skilled and intelligent fish are, something which is vastly under-estimated. The more people learn about how intelligent fish are through examples such as this, the better people will hopefully value and treat them, rather than consider them lower down the pecking order than other pets such as dogs.

There's a training kit called the R2 fish school training kit (from recollection) which some goldfish keepers have used and their fish love the stimulation. I think my goldfish would have loved it too but sadly he died before I heard of this. :(

Here is the link to the R2 fish school https://www.r2fishschool.com/fish-school-

It's possible that some fish enjoy the stimulation.

As for the clip shared, I don't think it's cruel to teach a fish to flip a light sponge ball, but I assume (and hope) that the fish generally has much more appropriate living conditions than that small tub.

@adenann my place of work is only a short walk from Ely Aquatics - very handy for a quick trip at lunch time.  :)

Fascinating what they can do, isn't it?
A friend posted a video a couple of days ago with a betta jumping through a hoop held about an inch above the water.

If I was less of a luddite with social media I'd post a link  :o
