Spur of the moment purchase.

I know I stated I wasn't going to get anymore fish until I could use the QT but on Saturday I had a massive wibble when we went to MA to get some live daphnia and frozen bloodworm.

The had FEMALE threadfins in stock!! My son pointed them out and although I was aiming to leave my 3 lone male threadfins as a tailing off shoal when I saw the females I changed my mind. The wibble was because the QT wasn't ready, however I succumbed and we now have 4 female threadfins. I also understand why the males display at the female celebes rainbow, their fins are very similar, although the threadfins have a more streamlined body shape.

This is the first time since I've been keeping fish that I've found a shop stocking females. Fingers crossed I'm not going to regret lack of quarantine.

Hope you don't mind, Fiona, but I've moved this thread from General Non-fishkeeping Chat to General Fishkeeping Chat  :)

That was a good find. I've always fancied threadfins but I've only ever seen males and would only get them if I could find both sexes.

Thanks Sue, I guess I put it in the wrong place. I know my MA have been asking for male and females for a few years and this is the first time they've got them. They are a pain to feed when they're small, they cant manage large mouthfuls, bloodworms only if they're chopped up, very small daphnia or finely crushed flaked food. It's why I was going to give up on them.

Lets see how it goes.

The threadfin rainbows are a species I haven't even looked at before, they are really smart looking little fish! I am absolutely champing at the bit to buy more fish to increase my current shoal sizes and I reckon I will add a maximum of two more species to my community. One of them will almost definitely be Rams/Rainbow cichlids. Threadfins are definitely a species I would consider....

The males look amazing when they're displaying.  :)

I didnt even ask how long they'd been in the shop cos I was so excited. I had been told by another LFS that breeders were a bit possessive about females and they were quite hard to get hold of, I've no idea why that would be the case though.

This is the first time in 3 years I've seen them.

It'd be hard to catch them displaying at other males, they suddenly raise their fins and zoom off across the tank.

I might try do a video, if I can pry my son's phone off him this evening. My pc and lappy don't recognise my phone as a device for some reason.

Ever considered Pseudomugils? Similar size and display behaviour.

I have had those in the past Colin and they are beautiful but I found them to be very greedy feeders and very prone to dropsy, even selecting a fish from the shop was hard because so many of them already had dropsy. I think they need to be in a species only tank for that reason.

For anyone (eg Paddy) who might be interested in the pseudomugils, Cod Only Knows keeps them eg: http://www.thinkfish.co.uk/forums/general-fishkeeping-advice/fish-suggestions-for-nano-tank/ ; http://www.thinkfish.co.uk/forums/fish-species/pacific-blue-eye/

Cod has different ones fcmf. I'm probably getting the wording back to front but there are many species within the pseudomugils genus.
