Shy Clown Loach?

I currently have 3 clown loach in my tank, 2 of which are slightly smaller and are very playful (well until they decide to play dead and lay on the bottom of the tank upside down).  The other clown loach is a bit bigger but I very rarely see it as it likes to wedge itself inside an tree trunk ornament.  It only just seems to fit in there and stays there most of the day vertically.  I'm a little concerned as it seems to be outgrowing the tree trunk.  I have had the fish for about 7 months and did wonder at the beginning if it was just nervous about being introduced to the other fish.  Anyone have any ideas please?

Hi Helen,

I think that behaviour is just clown loaches. However, they are very social fish and need to be in groups of at least 6. The fact you have just three might be making it feel a bit insecure.
But before you go out and get another three, can I ask how big the tank is? Clown loaches can grow up to 12 inches (30cm) and need huge tanks in the region of 180cm long. Since it is the larger fish that is hiding away, it may be that your tank is a bit too small for it?

Hi Sue

The tank they are in is an Aqua One 850 so its only 165 litres, I rescued the loaches from someone who I bought another tank from as he was going to kill them.  Originally there were 4 but the largest one had problems from the start and unfortunately only lasted 3 days, thankfully the other 3 are doing good.  I cant get another tank at the moment as I currently have 3 going this being the biggest.  The only other fish in the tank are tetra

Clown loaches are quite slow growing fish so you do have time to decide what to do - get a bigger tank or rehome them. I quite understand about rescuing them from the previous owner.

Going back to your first post, I forgot about the root ornament. There is a real danger of it getting stuck as it grows. Either take the ornament out of the tank before that happens or if it's the right shape, fill the smaller holes with something. Silicone would be the best but you would have to let the ornament dry first than wait 48 hours for the silicone to cure before putting it back. Or maybe pack some filter wool in the smaller holes?

Thanks for your help Sue.  I do want to remove the trunk ornament but was just a bit wary in case the loach sulked and had nowhere to hide lol.

I will have to look into getting tank number 4 then as im not keen on rehoming them (soft touch lol)

Thanks again   :D

Thanks Chris

The one that usually hides has made more of an appearance today, he doesn't seem as boisterous as the other 2 so maybe he just likes to get away from it all and have some 'me time' lol
