Shrimplets!

Hey, hey, hey.... it looks like at least two of the baby shrimp that I saw being born a couple of weeks ago have survived and boy, do they grow quickly. They're now about 6 or 7mm long and look like minature replicas of adult shrimps. I just hope they're now big enough not to be eaten by the Guppies.

No chance of a photo, I'm afraid.

EDIT: ...and two minutes after posting this, I read this:'(

'Lo Colin,

Oh my goodness!  If you apologise to the fishies if you have fish for tea....then I am in big trouble!  I am surrounded by fish one way or another....as our business here is 'Fish & Chips'  Still, fortunately I don't keep cod in my tank ;D
I hadn't even realised my membership status had changed...shows how much I blather on, doesn't it????

My thread is the New to Fishkeeping one, and pranks really aren't much fun if folk don't bite ;)  I was expecting a real old telling off after posting about the fishies I had bought, with the reality of my shopping trip back on my thread!!!  Sorry... the devil got in to me and I was bored!  So no, I didn't really buy any pandas or puffers, in fact Colin, I am shocked :o that you would even consider, that I would THINK of ignoring your advice to leave the tank alone (apart from one liddle-biddle rock with a moss wig on :D) and get pandas before my month was up!! :D  Admittedly, I am on countdown to that time....and it killed me yesterday to see little pandas in the shop waiting for someone to take them home and love them, and not buy them myself.  Still....patience, eh?

It seems pandas are a popular choice on here as I think Chrisp wants some too, but they are real sweeties, aren't they?

Cut'n'paste from ...shhhh....a different web-site......

......and large broods of over 100 fry are not uncommon.

......No particular effort is needed to breed them and eventually rearing the fry as the fry themselves are well developed enough to eat finely-ground prepared foods and brine shrimp nauplii. Fry can number up to 70 each time, although 20-50 is more usual, and require hiding places such as thick floating plant cover or they will be readily eaten by the adults.

Younger females have smaller broods, they have more as they get older. You don't need to worry too much. Yet........... ;D

How can you tell if you have young or older platies?  Apart obviously, from cutting them in half and counting the rings??? ;)

Fish on sale in shops tend to be younger. It costs money for the breeders, wholesalers and shops to hold fish so they are usually sold as young as possible. Most fish on sale are juveniles and not even fuly grown yet, that's why we always say to go by the adult size of any fish species rather than the size they are now when working out stocking levels.

Of course there are always exceptions  ;D

It gets worse than teenage pregnancies. I read somewhere once that a mature male can impregnate females as young as 3 weeks old :o At that age, the females don't get pregnant but they do store the sperm for when they are matrue enough and is one reason you have to separate female and male fry as young as possible when you are selectively breeding them.
