hi, i am thinking of putting a small piece of natural welsh slate in the tank to form the roof of a small shelter for shy fish, will the slate give me any problems?

Provided it is clean with no insecticide or other pollutants anywhere near it, slate is fine. It is a popular material for making caves.

Natural slate can sometimes have a metallic vein running through it - just avoid any like this. A quartz vein would be fine.

Check it over for sharp edges. If there are any, scrape them blunt with something.
