My new Betta

afternoon fellow fish lovers,

Just thought I'd post a couple of pictures of my new Betta. His name is Barquentine.
I ended up getting him online as an early Christmas present. It's a bit of a long story; I'd originally ordered a blue half moon plakat, but the day before he was due to be sent out, he jumped into his neighbour's tank and had a bit of a bust-up with the occupant (they did both survive, but it will take a couple of months before they're back to their normal selves).
The poor supplier couldn't get hold of me, so in the end he sent me a young halfmoon male, in the hope that he would be acceptable. As you can see, Barquentine is very handsome - the most beautiful shade of blue, with rose pink edging to his fins. Apparently, this type is called Thai Flag.

I'm absolutely thrilled with him. He's very bold and inquisitive, and loves chatting and passing the time of day with me. It's been quite a long wait, but worth it in the end.

Diz

He's a gorgeous betta, Diz, well worth the wait, even if he isn't the one you ordered.

I notice a couple of notches missing from his tail - they should grow out. Good, clean water will help.

Hi Diz,

He is really gorgeous. It's well worth keeping a photo record of him so you can watch for changes to his fins and tail. i've done this with Stan and it's helped me see if he has new notches or tears in his finnage.

Thanks Sue,

I noticed these as well. I'm testing the water every day. Do you think I should change it every day anyway, regardless of the tes results, just to help the fins heal?

If it's a small tank (easier for water changes!) then yes, do one every day till he shows signs of growing the damage out.

Damage like this is quite common in newly bought bettas and can easily come from handling during bagging.

Yes, it's small - 22 litres. How much should I change each day?

I'd do somewhere around 7 litres; a third. For me, that's a bucketful. I can't lift big buckets  :)

cool, glad to hear he is ok.
today i bought a betta imbellis (decribed as a king betta imbellis/plakat).
he is a nice dark blue with red fins, quite a large body and shorter fins than the betta splendens. a lot more like a wild betta but more colorful.
he is in my recently cycled heavily planted 30 litre nano cube busily exploring between the plants.
think i will call him ted.
apparently the betta imbellis is known as the peaceful betta and hopefully he will tolerate one or two tank-mates.
has anyone else kept one of these and what are the best tank-mates for him?
i was thinking of a pair of miniature aquatic frogs but i am not too sure........advice please?

I wouldn't keep these frogs with any fish.

It's worth looking at the Seriously fish site for any new fish

I have kept frogs with a Betta splendens and would never do so again. You will see them recommended as suitable tankmates for splendens but I don't think they are. I wouldn't keep them with any fish personally.

It is a nightmare trying to feed the frogs in a tank with fish, especially greedy ones that are willing to squeeze themselves into any small space to get at food, like splendens - I would be concerned that imbellis would be as bad. Not to mention that a frog bit my betta's tail and hung on, getting towed round the tank till it let go. The betta got finrot. ADFs can't see well and do mistake fish for food.
After that incident, the frogs were moved into my quarantine tank for the rest of their lives.

Plakat bettas are Betta splendens, just a short finned form.

the new betta (ted) is settling in nicely.
he has built a bubble nest overnight and is taking a little food. he also seems to have eaten some of the baby hitch hiker snails from my tank too. there were definitely less of them on the glass this morning.
ted is quite lively, swimming in all areas of my tank and chasing his reflection at times.
there is a beautiful red colour to his fins when he flares them up.
