Most underrated fish?

Neons, Harlequins, Celestial Pearl Danios and Dwarf Gouramis were all obvious choices when I considered stocking my tank. However, there are thousands of fish out there and I thought it would be interesting if people shared their opinions on what they think is the most underrated aquarium fish.

I went into my LFS expecting to walk out with a school of Rummynose Tetra or Harlequin Rasboras and I ended up with X-ray Tetra. Their tight schooling, beautiful fin tip colouration and see-through body has made them a firm favourite of mine.

What's your favourite underrated fish and why?

feeder goldfish.the  parents will buy dozens of feeder gold fish  to keep little "timmy"from finding out that the first fish died and that is the 32nd fish!!!!!1 they can live a nice long life if given the right stuff.a goldfish won from a carnival lived for over 50 years!!!!!I'm not sure if that counts as "under rated"this is how i feel when i hear stories about that :vcross: :vcross: :vcross:i have even heard a story about the sixties when people would get drunk and swallow live gold fish!!!!!!!!now they deserve a hammer to the head :vcross: :vcross:

There are a few fish with glass in the common name. The ones I've seen have been the glass catfish and I too have never seen Fiona's fish in shops.

I found some undyed ones in Pets At Home in Borehamwood. People have the idea that they're weak and hard to keep because the coloured ones are a bit like that.

The Glassfish is definitely one of those, actually including most smaller fish, that really does need to be kept in a shoal to look their best, as the photo shows. It's always a temptation for beginners to get a few of several different types of fish to give variety. but in a small tank shoals of one or two species usually look much better. It's like a flower garden, one each of dozens of different plants usually looks a mess whereas several of the same plant in a group or drift invariably looks better.

I think the Zebra danio is underrated, they are always lively and tough. I suspect that if they were rare and difficult to breed and keep, people would pay a lot for them. The more you have, the better they look.

Seriously Fish says about coloured Glassfish "protracted campaigning has seen them virtually removed from UK stores", but obviously not completely.

The shop my son got the coloured glassfish from also stock other artificially coloured fish  >:(  I wish it was illegal to sell them.

And yes Richard a shoal of the glassfish looks great, they are really fast movers and although they are supposed to be suitable fish for a tank 60cm in length I actually am inclined to disagree with that and think they need a longer one. On a few occasions I've seen the poor things change direction rapidly to avoid hitting the far wall of the tank and hitting the gravel  :(   I'm hoping they'll enjoy the larger tank when it's cycled and that the collisions will stop happening. Catching them is going to be a nightmare I think.
