I remember seeing a post from Resa a while back about the link to one of the LFS shops I go to that had some interesting cories in, but because of the trouble I was having with the site I forgot all about it and where the post was...!
So thought I'd post it here:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/208502612516523/
I also mention Sue as there's a few interesting Betta's they're selling at the minute and thought you'd like to see the pics! Some of the photos are just from the internet but a lot of them are from the tanks and fish in the shop
-
I'm not on Facebook so unfortunately I can't see the bettas :(
It's not finz n tailz by any chance?
-
Oh that's a shame I didn't realise you had to be on Facebook to see the groups. The shop is called The Aquatic Store. The Bettas they've got in atm are Crowntails and 'Dumbo Ear' ones
-
Hi Jesnon,
Thanks for the link, but unfortunately, I don't 'do' facebook either. Perhaps I'll be able to find the piccies on another site. I'd like to see them.
Resa
:)
PS. You're new little fishy looks lovely....any luck locating shrimpy yet?
-
Ahh how annoying! I think Facebook is usually where they post all of their stock updates, will try and find the posts in question about the cories anyway.
Unfortunately no sign of Shrimpy 6 still :-(
-
Right so I managed to find the post about cories, at the time they had in:
corydoras sterbi Wild
orange venezuelan corydoras..
corydoras bronze
peppered corydoras
albino corys
Seeing all the fish on the group when it gets updated every day is really making me want a new tank! But I'm so conflicted... I'd love to get a marine tank (http://www.thinkfish.co.uk/marines/cost) with two clowns like we were originally planning all that time ago, but I just don't know if I can get my head around it! I don't know if my partner would be too happy with a normal tank... though I think he would be if we could get more 'interesting' (e.g. BIGGER!) fish!
-
Just seen these two pictures from the LFS of fish currently in stock.... and I want!!

-
Me too - they're lovely!
-
I think they're just stock photos from the internet... but they're so lovely aren't they!? I can see them in a nice shiny new tank.... I showed my partner in a 'hey look, these are cute right?' and he just nodded and said they looked nice. Hmph, more convincing needed!
He liked penguin tetras when we were first looking at tanks, and he liked the opaline gourami in the first pic.... perhaps if I build up a potential fish list he'll be convinced ha! Anyone got any suggestions for my water that may convince him!? (Ph 8.2, water very hard)
-
Hi Jesnon,
They are beautiful fish! The cory looks like Corydora Adolfoi. I saw some of them at my LFS when I got my pandas.
The gourami is lovely, I haven't seen any of those.
My colisa is stunning..a real electric blue which doesn't come across in my pics. He is fine in my tank and I have really hard water too.
Good luck with the other half ;)

With your water you could keep Rift Lake cichlids and central American cichlids.
I don't know much about Rift Lake cichlids - my only knowledge is that they need very hard alkaline water, they are usually kept overcrowded to prevent any of them forming a territory, you have to stick to fish from one lake only, and they almost rival marine fish for colour.
Central American cichlids are usually quite big, tankmates should be chosen carefully so they don't get eaten, and these fish can be regarded as 'wet pets' as they do interact with their owner.
The reason I don't know much about them is that I have softish water and my tanks aren't big enough so I've never researched them.
-
Thanks for the suggestions all, I'm gonna get researching and try to convince him we need another tank!
-
OK... now my LFS is selling these fish
Gertrudae blue eye
(https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/1017052_10151433695671021_641515815_n.jpg)
I want them!! Apparently my tank would have been big enough to keep them too :'(
-
WANT SOME!!!.....NOW!
Must research these fishies, as I'm planning who will be in what tank...thanks Jesnon...or should I say, blast you, Jesnon ;D
-
Hehe sorry Resa! How's the tank planning / purchasing going?
I'm actually seriously considering another tank now... but I think my partner might notice eh? ;D
They look amazing though! I think my Ph might be too high for them, though if my LFS has them and keeps them in Bristol water then perhaps not? If my little tank is big enough for them I could get a bigger tank for my endlers and add some more fish... but er... it's not like I've been thinking about it or anything? ;)
-
Hi Jesnon,
Tank planning going fairly well, I nearly rushed out to get my new one the other week, but stopped for more research. The last thing I want is to get one, then find a better one...mind you, I'll probably end up getting the first one I saw, that's usually the way :-\
Rainbowfish were on my first ever, original fish list, but not these ones. The ones I liked were/are on the fish profiler, as dwarf rainbowfish. I also quite fancied the threadfin rainbows. The good news, having just had a quick peek at some info on them, is that they all get along so you can have a mix of varieties. I still have to find how many of each sort I would need to get. I think 3 females to 1 male...still researching :) Like you, I'm also not sure if my water would be ok for them.
I also have a vague recollection of reading here this week from someone, (maybe Natalia?) about some little fish that were prone to problems and that she would only get if they were wild caught...they might have been rainbows...or I could have just made that up...I'll have to have a check. ???
You absolutely MUST get another tank! It's a girls right to have lots of new shoes and lippy.....and fish tanks ;D ;D
-
I had some Pseudomugil gertrudae once. The males were fine, it was the females I had problems with. They were OK for a while, laid eggs and such; then one by one they started rolling over and died shortly afterwards.
I read on fishbase that they need pH 6.0 to 6.0 (think that last is a misprint?) and hardness 5 to 12, so I assumed my pH was too high at 7.4 But seriously fish reckons pH 4.5 to 7.5 and hardness 90 to 215ppm (5 to 12 german deg) which fits with my water. So I have no idea why my females died - unless it was the problems that Natalia (?) mentioned.
-
Glad tank planning is going OK, it's always tricky with these things since they're such an investment. I wish I'd actually researched more into tanks before picking my Edge - though I do love it and it goes nicely with everything else in my flat, a bigger tank would have given me a lot more room to play with! And inevitably it's easy to go back to where you started too! I do that all the time when shopping for shoes :P
You absolutely MUST get another tank! It's a girls right to have lots of new shoes and lippy.....and fish tanks ;D ;D
Definitely! I'm working on it, not had much luck so far though :P It would be sensible to wait until I move anyway to get a new tank I suppose though moving is on hold for the time being!
And Sue hmm sorry to hear you didn't have much luck with these guys. The guy at the shop says they keep them is 7.2 so I really don't know, my water probably isn't compatible with these little guys!
-
Anyone seen an axolotl before? The same LFS is selling them with a tank for £100 - they're such funny looking things!

When I first started teaching (~25 years ago.... eeek!!) the Biology teacher had one in his lab. They don't actually do much except sit there and look strange with their external gills.
The juvenile form of the salamander, if I remember correctly. It never matures due to lack of iodine in the water.
-
Ooh I had no idea you were a teacher Colin, great stuff! Haha they do look very strange. I was looking them up out of pure curiosity, one site said they were a 'de-evolved' (but a more scientific word for it!) form of salamander as you said that doesn't mature. How strange. Such a strange choice of a pet but I can see the appeal now I've been looking at them for 20 minutes (I really need to tidy my flat, so you can see why googling these is a better and more appealing use of my time :p). For some reason I've already seen this creature before but I can't for the life of me remember why!
I really want another fish tank now... every thing I see I'm intrigued by!
-
Was a teacher now, I'm afraid (Physics). Successive government interference took all the joy out of it. *sigh*
If I had something other than fish and cats, I'd go for a Bearded Dragon:

Oh Jesnon, he's wicked! A face only a mother could love! My son is now pestering for one of these chaps....honestly, you'd think he was 5! ;D
-
I still think those little guys are awesome!
I've been making some not so subtle hints about my desire for a new tank. Yesterday was told to save my pennies then - am taking this as progress! I would love a big tank, but was thinking maybe another small tank would be easier to swing! And I always thought dumbo ear bettas were pretty cute! I'd still love to go marine but I just can't get my head around it yet!
-
Good news!
If space is a problem, you could go for the bigger Edge which has the same footprint as the one you already have. You would still be restricted to fish that don't need a long tank, but you could have more of them. Of course, a betta might not be suitable......
-

He's some no-so-light reading to help with the head-getting-round scenario: Put the kettle on! (http://www.wetwebmedia.com/marine/index.htm) ;D
Just found this (http://www.fishlore.com/SaltwaterBeginners.htm) while searching for something else. You'll need another brew-up!
-
Ooh I could do. I need to look into bigger tanks really.
With my very hard 8.2ph water is there any pretty fish that you'd suggest to tempt in a not particularly big tank? Say a few bigger fish?
And Colin thanks for the links, think marine will have to be something I try after lots of saving up then!
-

....or there's this (http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/content.php?sid=4161) at a smidge under £100

-
Hmmm now that is tempting! Though I read nano tanks for marine are the same as nano tanks for tropical in that they are harder to keep as stable environments (not that I've had that problem really with my little edge). I'm guessing due to the size of that tank you can't actually keep any fish though like our beloved B&W angels. Hmmm. It would still make a fine introduction to marine tank (http://www.thinkfish.co.uk/marines/cost) keeping though... *ponders*. You know - it's my birthday coming up in a month or so too and my parents were asking after what I wanted :-P
Looks like I need to get reading! A pain when I only have a dongle since Sky are being daft about fitting our internet since our flat apparently doesn't exist!
Edit: thinking about it, I'm sure this tank was at my local MA. Gorgeous little thing!
-
There you go! Birthday and house-warming pressie - what's not to like? 8)
My local MA has one ticking over on the counter. They have soft corals in it, the occasional shrimp & hermit crab, and a small gobi or two. They do have the advantage of putting a small stock fish in, and then putting it back in the main tanks if/when it got too big.
Hold on, Jesnon.... I've another idea. Back in a few mins after googling stuff!!!
-
OK.... I'm back!
Quite a few people seem to have used the 55litre AquaOne 40 cube (the same I have for freshwater) as a marine tank (http://www.thinkfish.co.uk/marines/cost).... and a pair of Clown fish seem to be the popular addition - along with live rock and inverts. The tanks are £100 (tho' I've occasionally seen them for £75 at P@H), but if you want to keep corals then the light needs upgrading.
Here's (http://www.ultimatereef.net/forums/showthread.php?t=550703) a thread (plus piccies) in another forum about it, and googling aqua one nano 40 marine pulled up loads of links. I was/am sort of interested, but unsure, about turning to the salty side. More difficult it is. ;D ....but you know that!
-
Thanks for this Colin! looks like I need to get reading! It looks like that may be a tank worth getting either way - small enough to hopefully fit in my little flat but big enough to open lots of other fishy possibilities. Looks like I need to get reading! hopefully my internet will be sorted soon so I can do a bit of proper googling!
-
I've been pondering it over and I think I will have to put my salty fish desires on hold for a while longer. Since I'm still only renting my current flat contract is only for 6 months so the possibility of moving is always quite imminent - it was stressful enough with my little fish tank let alone a whole marine tank (http://www.thinkfish.co.uk/marines/cost) too! It looks like the costs would also soon stack up unless I went for a cheaper 'all built in' model like that little one you posted Colin, so I need to get saving! Hopefully when I'm more settled and not prone to move at the drop of a hat then I can finally get a marine tank (http://www.thinkfish.co.uk/marines/cost)!
I still have the Bristol fish shop on my Facebook - I think I'll keep it as it means I get to see things like this guppy:
Thought Sue might want to see this 'blue pearl' fighter too!
-
Good thinking, Jesnon....moving a marine tank (http://www.thinkfish.co.uk/marines/cost) is a whole new load of worry! My son had to move his one and all its inhabitants when they moved house....very stressful. Still, it gives you time to do your homework on the 'salty side' so you will be expert at it all when the time comes ;)
What a fantastic looking guppy...he looks the same colour as my Rafe. The blue-pearl fighter is lovely too.
-
Ha yes I hope so! I think I'll get researching and planning the perfect tank, hehe. It was definitely stressful enough moving my little tank, without having to worry about expensive delicate fish and scary sounding corals too!
Yes he does look more like a fighter doesn't he!? Very pretty. I'm still quite tempted to get another small tank, though where to put it is still questionable!
-
Yeah...get another tank, you know you want to ;) How about a little one in your bathroom? Then you can properly chillax when you're in the bath :D
-
Our bathroom is actually quite big so I'm sure a tank would fit nicely in there ha, but we don't have any windows in either of our bathrooms unfortunately :-(
-
Why do you need windows? Back in the UK, the LFS near to us and indeed the one I worked at as a Saturday girl, (back when Noah's cat was a kitten ;D ) had dark rooms for their tanks, they looked amazing. Maybe though, that's not what you should do these days...I don't know, thinking changes all the time :-\
Someone on here will know for sure.
What do you think people?
-
Hmm actually thinking about it, I guess if the fish have their own 'light' maybe it doesn't matter? I guess at least you won't have any excess algae problems caused by sunlight ha! Though again thinking about it I don't have any normal non-shaver plugs in my bathroom anyway ^^; (I'm not doing too well with this ha!)
But I'm still intrigued by the answer to this!
-
Rather than dragging my other thread even further off topic I thought I'd post this here!
I got a very quick look into one of the MAs in my new area. .. looked great! Seemed to have a huge variety of fish there and I spotted some endlers described as 'blonde endler guppies' which looked lovely. They had a huge selection of guppies. I may be restocking my fish in a couple of weeks assuming I have no more casualties. Fingers crossed but looking more settled now. ..
-
Hi Jesnon!
Glad things seem to be settling down in your little water world now. These fishies can be such a worry, can't they?
I'll have to look out for those endlers here....mind you, I've only seen one shop that stocked any endlers at all.
There are some really beautiful guppies around...are you thinking of getting some of those then? Don't forget, like Colin and Sue have said, guppies have a reputation for just up and dying for no reason sometimes, but your chances are better if they are locally bred.
Let us know what you decide on eventually....and post piccies!!! :D
-
I think I'll be sticking to endlers because of my little 5, I do love guppies though but I think my tank is too small for them IIRC. I'm going the endlers will still be in stock as there were always some in Bristol, they seem more rare here though. How's your tank going resa? Did you manage to get a new one in the end or is Rafe still happy in with the others?
-
Great selection of fishies today! Saw some pygamy puffers sooo cute amongst others and some of the little blue guys I posted on the first page. I wish I had room for another tank!
-
Forgot to say they also had axolotls. Cuties!
