Just wanted to ask how this weather is going to impact on my temperate tanks?
I'm having enough trouble with my axolotl tanks, using mesh lids, clip on fans and frozen water bottles to keep their tank temperature down, and now I'm starting to worry about the other tanks too.
The temperature forecast for today is 33C, but due to drop to around 23C by Thursday. I'm trying to keep the room as cool as possible, curtains drawn, various windows open etc. I was wondering if there is anything else I should do?

Maybe water changes, Donna? Obviously this would mean a fair amount of your presence/monitoring and actual work with the amount of tanks you have, how many temperate tanks do you have?
I have been keeping an eye on my temp which hovers between 24 and 25 normally... At the hottest part of yesterday it was up at 26... Unfortunately I'm at work for the next 4 days so any peaks in temperature will go uncorrected. I doubt it will get too high though

I wouldn't worry about it, a day or so of higher temps won't do any harm. Good idea to keep the lights off during the hottest part of the day, though, again a day or two won't harm the plants.

I haven't put any lights on for a couple of days because it's been so warm.
I was just a bit worried that I wasn't doing something that was very obvious to more experienced keepers. :)

You're pretty much doing everything you can Donna, the only other thing you can do is invest in an air-con unit for the room with your tanks.

My tank is up to 27 degrees - which is fine for all my fish but I worry about the Pandas.
I put two litres of cold water in this morning and will do my weekly water change today (three days early) to bring it down. This is the downside of having a tank in the conservatory.
From what I know, most temperate fish can tolerate quite high temperatures (for them) anyway for a short period. I used to keep goldfish in tropical tanks many years ago. I'm not saying this is a good idea, as it increases their metabolism and shortens their lives, but a few days of extra degrees should be ok.
If you are worried though I'd do a big water change.

Temperate tanks are currently running at 23C, which isn't bad considering how hot it is outside.
I've got fans going and the fish seem ok at the moment.

No issues so far Matt. ;D
Went out yesterday and bought several desk top fans and dotted them around the room.
Although tanks went up to 25C everyone still seems very keen on breakfast this morning.
I still haven't switched on any lights, and we still have today to get through, so I won't be 100% sure until tomorrow (temperature forecast to drop to 24C), but all seems to be going well so far.
So relieved.

Tank got to 28 last night! Time to get some desk fans.

With fans, open the lid and blow air across the water surface. This cools the water by latent heat of vapourisation.

I had the same problem, but mines in my conservatory, covered the windows and sides of the tank with radiator reflectors, run with no lights fan across the top ice bottles, top up with cold water, but still 28c, so went on eBay found a used chiller, connected it to my external filter now if it hits 27c chiller comes on about 30 mins back down to 26c.

This year I treated my axolotls to a chiller unit. Their tank now remains at a very comfortable 18 - 19C regardless of the weather. I don't have a chiller on my smaller temperate tank as I can deal with that one with fans, etc. but as the axolotl tank is so big, and they are so prone to illness, stress & death above 24C, the chiller was worth it.

yes glad I got mine, much nicer looking with hood and lights on, looking at it now on 26.8 so chiller will cut in within the next hour.
