Title: Fish keeping forums never gets boring
Post by: water watcher on April 25, 2013, 07:27:31 AM
Over the past 28 years i've kept many types of fish, dealt with water problems, disease, birth and death and partners with less than enthusiastic attitudes.

It seems to me the longer i do this the less i seem to know. There is always things to learn, new fish, new ways of doing things, new research etc etc.

The single best change over all these years is the web. When i started i only had some old books from the library and the local pet shop that had a tank between some budgies and gerbils.

Being able to discuss concerns or ask questions from other experienced  keepers and get immediate answers is awesome.

Never mind being able to share your successes with people who are interested...

I agree.... there's always something to learn. But it's still surprises me how many people don't do any research at all before buying a tank and putting living creatures in it. All you need to do is google 'starting keeping fish' and the first result is a great intro to setting up your first tank.

Water Watcher, you've been keeping fish longer than me (about 18 years) but I too had only library books to learn from, books which were out of date even then.
It was only when we got broadband and discovered the internet that I found how much there was to learn. I still read and read, and I have files of things I've copied so I can find the info when I need it.
There is always someone who has kept the fish you are interested in and can advise; someone who has the same water problems, the same bad advice from a shop and so on.

Colin, too many people see fish as a living ornament. How hard can it be, buy a tank, fill it with water and put some fish in. So long as you remember to feed them once in a while, what's to know? We'll never convince this type of person of the truth.

Very true. They'd be far better of keeping houseplants - but they'd put them in full sun and over-water them 'cos they didn't read the label! :-\
