Broody Colisa?

Hi All,

This afternoon I had a moment of panic.  I thought Flockhart was caught up somehow in my java moss, he had it all along his head and back.  I was about to rush to his rescue when I realised he actually had it all gathered in his mouth and was placing it under the bubble nest he has obviously spent the day blowing :D He was being very particular about where he put it all...rearranging it until he had it how he liked it. It at least answers the question of how the moss keeps getting pulled off of its rock and is floating round the tank all the time.  He has chased away the blue platys every time they have gone near...but then he always chases them!
It's a shame when he has put so much work in to his little love-nest, but I will have to take it out, I think.  I don't want to run the risk of him getting bolshy with Rafe, although they normally ignore one another.
What do you all think? Is he more likely to get stroppy if I remove his nest or if I leave him choosing curtains and cushions? ;)

Some gourami species do use plants in their bubble nests. I can't say for sure about Flockhart and Rafe as I've only had dwarf gouramis very briefly (after two died I gave up on them). Honeys aren't as aggressive but my male only really chases other fish if there are eggs or fry in his nest. And then he only chases the other fish away and scurries back to keep guard.

Thanks Sue,

Yes, that's actually a very good description of what he is doing....chasing away, then scurrying back. Did you have dwarf gouramis like Flockhart then? Did they die of that virus thing that they are prone to? Also, how long did you have them before they died?
Sorry for all the questions, but it's always good to know what to look out for.

P.S. He now has a very fetching green moss shag pile carpet in his pad ;D

My dwarfs lasted a couple of weeks each. But it was early in my fishkeeping career so it could well have been my incompetence. This was back in the very early 2000s and my memory isn't good enough to rember exactly how they died. I had a wild coloured one (stripey) then a red one. After the second one died I decided it was me/my tank that was the problem and I wouldn't get any more, so I got honey gouramis instead.

I do rember that the stripey one came from Pets @ Home and the shop worker tried to convince me that the powder blue male was a female striped. I knew it wasn't, the silver ones were the females, but I was too inexperienced to challenge him, so I asked at the checkout instead and the woman there did know they were both males and made him change one.
