Hi All,
I've received a letter from the water board, saying that they will be carrying out major work on the pipes, which will last approx. 4 weeks.
They say that there may be some discolouration and maybe some particles in the water, but by slowly running the tap until the water clears, it will be ok to use.
Obviously, I am concerned about the welfare of my fish when doing my weekly water changes.
I'm hoping that if the water is ok for human consumption, then, it will be fine for the fish?
Does anyone have any experience of this?

In my experience, these letters are sent out to a largish area and any individual street will only have work done for a short period within that time frame.
Does your water company have a section where you type in your postcode and it gives a list of work being done for that postcode? If it does, that could narrow down the time you will be affected. Then you'd just need to avoid doing water changes at that time.
But if there's nothing to narrow it down, I think I would get something that you could run all the water needed for a water change into before you start taking water out of the tank. That way you would see before you started taking water out if the tap water was nice and clear, or discoloured - and in the latter case leave the water change to another day.
Edit - it might be an idea to run some water a day or two before a water change, on a day when you know the water is fine. Some water companies have been known to add extra chlorine as a 'just in case' measure when doing things to the mains and standing the water for a couple of days would allow chlorine to gas off.

Thanks Sue,
I'll see if I can get any more information from the website. If not, I'll follow your advice regarding the colour of the water.
I do have 2x25lt containers that I could store water in, but I don't know how I would heat the water :-\

Save a couple of kettlefuls of water in something else, something that won't contaminate the kettle, then just boil a kettle and use that to heat the water. I find that 1.5 litres boiling water in a 9.5 litre bucket gets the water to the right temp at this time of year (I use less boiling water in the middle of summer)

Good idea......thank you :)
