Hi Flaree,

I'm a newbie to all this myself, so I'm sure one of the more experienced members will be able to give you more specific advice, but if you look at the articles on this site, particularly the one on 'introducing Fish', it recommends introducing new fish a few days after maintenance and leaving a week before any further maintenance (which includes water changes I guess). Hopefully that might help a little till someone more savvy responds to your question!  :)

I wasn't aware of this! I did a water change the morning before getting fish, and intend to do the same when I add more fish, then no water change is needed for a week, test results permitting.
I would have thought good water quality was more important than any disturbance to your fish??

Anyway, as Diz1 has already said...

Hopefully that might help a little till someone more savvy responds to your question!  :)

my water change cycle falls on a friday and tuesday so i tend to do my water change on a friday and then go to get fish on satarday or sunday leaveing at least 48 hours before i have to do a tank clean, althow with my fish being so messy and haveing a sandy bottom i do find myself having gravel vac at least every other day so the tank stll gets distrurbed

Leave them for at least a few days as they've just had a stressful time being caught, transported and introduced... test perameters permitting as Puffin rightfully says.

Remember, a water change doesn't have to be a disturbing affair. You can discreetly syphon water out and add new water without much disturbance. You can leave the gravel hoovering for later.

However, if you are doing a cycle using fish, you need to do a water change as soon as you see a reading above zero for ammonia. Yes, water changes can be stressful for new fish, but swimming in ammonia is more stressful.

Yet again, another reason for doing a fishless cycle!

Currently waiting for my ph test kit so I don't know what's going in the tank :(
But my shadow catfish died last night and my amano shrimp died the previous day, so I think its more risk waiting a week than it is disturbing them
Thanks :)
