Hi All
Im looking at fish for a Tank I purchased.

Its a juwel 125litre w/internal filter

the tank has been set up and running just under a month now,

Im looking at Tetras,Guppys etc.

I just don't want to overstock the tank so im thinking(not all at once)

4 x guppy
6 x neon tetras
6 x Platys (red wag or bumblebee)
and maybe a pleco

I just don't want to buy fish and down the line it gets overcrowded or the fish get stressed etc.

Thankyou Pete

Hi Pete

I used to have a Rio 125, nice starter tank  :)

When you say the tank has been set up and running, do you mean you filled it with water and just let the filter run, or did you add ammonia to cycle it?

If you just let it run, it won't be ready for fish for a while yet so you have a few weeks to fine tune your wish list.
This is what you need to do to get the tank ready for fish.

Now to your list.
You have both soft water fish (neon tetras) and hard water fish (guppies and platies) in the list, so one or other will not be happy.
The first thing to do is find out if you have hard or soft water, the easiest way is to look on your water comapny's website. There are about half a dozen units they could use, but only two are used in fishkeeping, so when you find the hardness, tell us the number and the unit the company uses and we can convert it, if necessary, to the units fishkeeping websites use.
Once we have your water hardness it will be easier to talk fish species  :)

Hi there.

Well done on the fishless cycling.

It looks like you have very soft water, so best to look at some other fish instead of guppies and platies. There are lots of beautiful software fish, and it's worth having a look through the fish profiles on this site, and using the community creator to start looking at your stock list.

I have very hard water here, but there are a lot of keeps on this forum that can provide a lot of good advice on soft water fish. I'm looking forward to hearing about your plans, and seeing lots of pictures.  :)

Does the water company have a section just for hardness rather than a water quality report? I'm not sure if we can convert the calcium level on its own as hardness also includes magnesium.

The calcium and magnesium levels in the report show they are both low so as Littlefish says, you have soft water.

And your tap water nitrate is nice and low  :)

There are also plenty of fish that will be quite happy in a range of water hardnesses.

That said, some of my favourite soft water specific fish are:
Dwarf Cichlids (get a pair as a 'centrepiece') which have a bit more intelligent/interesting behaviour
Celestial Pearl Danio (tiny 2cm beautiful fish)
Cardinal Tetra (neon tetra you mentioned earlier would fare better in harder water, but is less colourful)
Rummy Nose Tetra
