Stocking Community Tank

Hey,
I don't really know if this is the right place to put this but here goes  :P I've been keeping tropical fish for about a year now. I just got a 150L (33Imperial or 40US gallons) tank. I've cycled it, and I've moved 3 Blue Gouramis from a smaller tank into it. I've also just added a pair of Kerbensis and a Rainbow Shark. I was wondering what else I could add? The tank is half planted and I'm adding caves for the shark and kerbensis. I'd like a bit of colour, maybe some schooling fish? Would a school of tiger barbs be alright?
Thanks for any help  :D

Hi Alexander.

You'll find deciding on stocking much easier once the community creator is back again, but until then.....

I would avoid tiger barbs. They have the reputation for being very nippy fish, and gouramis have tempting fins, mainly the modified pelvic fins (the thread like feelers they use to feel things with). You would need to avoid small fish with the ones you already have, so a shoal of small-growing tetras is out - that includes the very colourful neon tetras. If you like the colour of tiger barbs, what about the similar looking but less aggressive pentazona barbs aka five band barbs? Or harlequin rasboras? Possibly cherry barbs? You need to avoid small torpedo shaped fish (they could get eaten) and go for deeper bodied ones. There are some deep bodied tetras, but avoid serpae tetras as they are fin nippers like tiger barbs. I had some once, every other fish in the tank had bits missing.

You should be OK with kribs in a tank your size, but watch out of they decide to breed, they could decide the shark is an enemy of their eggs/fry. And keep an eye on the shark as they can be aggressive towards similar shaped fish eg the kribs, though it is less aggressive than the red tailed shark. At least you only have one of them, a lot of people get more than one!
