QT tank question

Hello!

I am looking at re establishing my QT tank since the dreaded Lymphosistis saga and wondered what people thought was the best substrate to use. I am thinking the most likely answer is none!! But, wondered if these glass beads would be any good.

(Sorry, Don't have the brain power to do fancy link incorporating!!)

My tank is 19 litres, as you know and I reckon 1kg would be sufficient. Would do you reckon folks?!

Provided they are fish safe, they would be fine. I used some brown stripey stones in my betta's tank several years ago. I haven't a clue about the weight though, but if there are too many you can use them for other things. In a small tank you don't want the substrate to be too deep and displace too much water. My QT/hospital tank is bare bottomed. I only put a thin layer of sand in it on the odd occasion that the occupant(s) must have a substrate.

I wanted to ask a question about a QT too. How do you keep it ticking over? I've got some endlers in mine atm to keep filter bacteria alive and they seem happy enough, they have minimal gravel substrate and artificial plants, a plastic cave and some terracotta pot bits for hidey holes,  I can sterilize everything if need be and add them to the big 200l when it finishes cycling but I feel like I'm treating them as a bit of kit, although they're happy as larry in there.

So..how do you keep a QT/Hosp tank rolling?

I recommend reading the "Isolation tanks" article in the Fish Articles section of this site.
The information there seems to make good sense to me and differs from that which is commonly proposed.

I have just read that article.

Dark substrate - I don't use a substrate but the tank is on a black mat.
Ornaments - I use a lot in my QT. Caves made from pvc piping, plastic plants etc. All easy to wash.
Lights - I only use one when when I'm quarantining plants to remove anything harmful to shrimps and snails
Small tank as I only have small fish!
Small internal filter kept just for this tank
Media stolen from one of my other tanks as and when needed.

Just to say that my recommendation to read the article was directed to the two people with queries about QTs, rather than Sue  :)

Many of the queries people have on the forum can easily be answered by reading the relevant article

Ah but it shows that I do what the article says   ;)

And what I use to comply with the article to give others some ideas.

Thanks for all your answers and advice regarding my QT tank questions. I read the article this morning too and it is very informative. I hadn't thought of just setting it up when it was required using existing tank water and a filter that was run as a spare in another tank!! I may well do that in future as my other thought had been to use a few of my Glow lights as stock to keep it going when it was not in use.

I have ordered some glass pebbles and everything else is disinfected and thoroughly rinsed and my QT tank stuff is now stored away from my main tank stuff and clearly labelled so there can be no cross infection.

I am holding off buying more fish for now though as my health is not too good at the mo and I'm not up to monitoring it etc.

Thanks again for your help folks.
