Peppered cories and plants

I'm planning to get a small group of peppered cories for my 120l tank. A comment on Seriously Fish got me thinking: will they keep uprooting my plants?

I have play sand as substrate (with a layer of soil underneath for the plants) and the tank is planted pretty heavily. Some of the plants are quite small, been growing them from a tissue culture type of thing so these are the ones most in danger.

I've never had peppered cories before, so I don't really know how vigorously they dig (though I probably worry for no reason). Any advice will be appreciated.

My current fish are honey gouramis and rummy nose tetras.

I don't have cories as big as peppered, but I have seen photos of them rooting in sand for bits of food with sand coming out of their gills. I think it is this activity that has the potential to damage plants rather than digging them up.

Of course you could always choose a smaller cory! I know from experience that pygmy cories don't dig like this, they feed off the top of the sand.

With a soil layer under the sand, plants should very rapidly root into the soil. Provided you have a reasonable depth of sand (2 cms plus) on top of the soil you should be Ok as cories don't really dig like some cichlids, just rootle around in the surface layers of the substrate. (is "rootle" a real word? Sounds good anyway  :)))

I have two peppered corys and yes they do 'rootle', to use Richards expression, all the time ( I refer to this as wiffling - which isn't a word either!!!!).  I had problems with my newly planted plants which had small roots but my established plants are no problem. i have small gravel as a substrate.

I also have some moss literally just pushed into gaps on my drift wood and they do not disturb this. They have never been seen digging, possibly because my substrate is not fine enough tho.

Thank you for all your answers. I guess the cories won't do any more damage than my honey gourami who, as I discovered, is a vegetarian with a special taste for Cabomba.  :yikes:

Thank you for the suggestion, Sue, but I used to have a small group of pygmy cories and found them to be very delicate. Also they might be too small for the other fish I'm planning to buy in the future.

I do have a 2 cm layer of sand which should be plenty of space for cories to rootle and wiffle to their hearts' content.
