Hi Folks,

I seem to have oily film on the top of the water on my big tank, i usually soak it up with kitchen towel, as I'm aware it can reduce the oxygen for the fish but I wondered if anyone knew what caused it or how to prevent it?

Hi FC,

What water conditioner do you use? Stress Coat can leave a film on the tank, though I'm not sure it's that noticeable...

I use Tap safe.

I wondered if it was anything to do with having live plants in the tank?

I haven't noticed it in the main tank but there was a definite film over the sponge filter in the week.
Since I've fiddled around with the filters this week (checking them) it seems to have disappeared so I am assuming it went through the last sponge filter.

I use Tapsafe

I can't see how plants would cause this.
It could just be oil from the fish food, which is intrinsically oily.
Does your filter cause a reasonable amount of disturbance to the surface, e.g. ripples? IF you can make sure it does, this will often disperse the film.

Richard has it spot on. The usual culprit is fish food.

Right o! I'll try a different food then. I have two filters and both agitate the surface but the film still forms. The reason I mentioned plants was because I noticed it another thread somewhere.

Thanks folks!
