Lovefish Concept 27 litre tank

So I've just bought this tank as I need to take out my baby Kribs from my main community tank. My concern is that the built-in filter, while not powerful in its flow, could be big enough for the babies to enter.

May be a long shot but is there a way around this without having to change to a different filter?

As it's getting late and I haven't much time to google images, what exactly is the filter like? A quick google says it has a section at the back that contains the filter, but how does that chamber connect with the main tank? A hole with a tube going through, a series of slits or something else?

With the tube through a hole type, you can plug the gap with a bit of filter wool. Other types will need a bit of thinking.......

It's split in to compartments. First compartment is left empty (not sure what for). Second compartment features a sponge pad, carbon and another sponge pad, third has a sponge pad followed by other filter media and another sponge. Final compartment is where the pump is situated and the outlet/pipe for that fits through a slot to then enter the tank. It's the outlet pipe (probably not the proper name but it's late :)) that concerns me.

If water is flowing out through the pipe, fry should not be able to swim against the current. But it sounds like it is the type where the outlet pipe slots through a hole in the divider between the main tank and the filter chamber. Fry can fit through even a tiny gap. Filter wool stuffed into such a gap will still allow water flow but will stop fish squeezing through.

The only other option would be to remove all the filter bits and use a sponge filter powered by an air pump. This type of filter is widely recommended for fry as they can't get sucked or swim into anything that would harm them.

I did buy a sponge filter, just not entirely sure how it works. This is the one I bought: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Single-Sponge-Filter-Aquarium-breeding/dp/B00ALYRXIW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1422788495&sr=8-1&keywords=single+mini+sponge+filter#productDetails

Do you know how it would connect to an air pump?

To be honest, I don't know either  :-[

I think a look at youtube might give the answer.

Will do. Failing that, do you have any recommendations on a suitable sponge filter?

Only know what I've been reading about as I was looking for similar so on that basis here goes!
There is a little black "nipple" type thing on one side.
Connect that to a hose and the other end to the pump.

This is not for submersible pumps (although I will stand correction)

Water will come out of the top "chimney" I believe

Hope that helps

Thanks Sanjo, got it all connected and that is what's happening, although it is slightly noisy.

Is it the air pump that's noisy? They do have a reputation for that. Remedies include standing the pump on a folded towel to absorb the noise or suspending the pump on a thread. I've never had an air pump but from what I gather the noise is worse when the pump vibrates against a solid surface.

Air pump is fine, just a gentle hum, it sounds more like the water going through the filter isn't running through smooth, but maybe I'm just not used to it and am being fussy :)

Should I take out all the filter media?

Do you mean out of the first tank bferg4?

PS I have two air pumps on the go at present and one of those is VERY noisy.
Shouldn't complain though as it was given to me in the 1st place and I have repaired it so shouldn't expect too much.

Should I take out all the filter media?

It depends on whether you want to put the sponge filter inside the filter compartment or in the main tank. Obviously if it goes in the filter section you would have to remove everything from there. If you put the sponge filter in the main tank, it is up to you. I suppose removing everything would give the fry more swimming room.

Moved some of the fry into new tank. Not moving them all as I don't want to risk losing them all. Easier catching them and moving them than I thought it would be (used the jug and net method).

I forgot to use some of the water from my main community tank when filling the new one. Added two of the fry into the new tank (same temp and hardness, PH slightly lower) and have added one of the ornaments I had from main tank in to it. Water is cloudy though: not sure if it is the new tank syndrome or the sand not being washed thoroughly enough. Will keep testing conditions and parameters but is this cloudiness harmful?

Cloudiness isn't usually harmful. If it is from the sand, it will slowly settle out. Or it could be a bacterial bloom. Bacterial blooms are only harmful if the bacteria use too much oxygen from the water and deprive the fish. If the new tank and the equipment in it are brand new there could be a fair amount of plasticiser and chemicals from the sealant feeding the bloom bacteria. And any uneaten food from feeding the fry since they went in the tank (though it is probably a bit quick for food to cause a bacterial bloom)

The ornament would have had some bacteria on it; checking the levels of ammonia and nitrite for a few days will confirm whether it has enough for 2 fry. Because they are growing rapidly they do produce more ammonia than you'd expect for their size.
The water from the main tank wouldn't have had any useful bacteria but would have meant the water in the new tank would be similar to the old.

I used water from main tank when I moved my cories, just forgot to do it this time around. I'm going to wait another day or two before moving more fry over - there's probably around 20.

Thanks Sue.

The two baby kribs that I moved to into this tank sadly died. I had tested my water last night and all ok, arrived home from work and they were lying on the bottom. There is uneaten food in the tank from when I fed them last night, and with no algae source like there is in my main tank I'm wondering if they have starved? Or perhaps they have been too stressed from the move over? Any suggestions on what may have happened and how to prevent it are very much welcomed.

Thanks.

This may be a silly question, but did you use a water conditioner when you filled the new tank?
