Help identifying a shrimp

Hi, I'm new to this fishy business and have hit a bit of a stumbling block.  I've recently purchased two amano shrimp and one looks classically like the description, the other however not so much so. I'm not sure if it's a gender thing or species but if anyone could help me identify 'him' it would be very much appreciated. Thanks sarah

Welcome to the forum

It's a bit hard to see from the photos, but does this shrimp have any markings down its sides? Female amanos are easier to see as their markings are reddish brown dashes down the sides while males have less visible dots. If there are no markings at all, it is probably some species of ghost/glass shrimp.

But just to check - the pincers on the front, the ones they put food into the mouth with - are they short or long? There have been reports of people buying long arm shrimps labeled as amanos and ghost shrimp, but you don't want any of them in your tank as they can and will catch small fish.

This is a good site to look at photos to compare to your shrimp.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply! Markings wise there's a very slight dashed brown line only visible when he's hunched up and otherwise not visible. He's got a brown head with a yellow/ brown stripe down the back, very long antennae and his arms are nice and short.  I'm thinking about getting him some new friends so want to make sure I get the right ones and that I know how to best look after him. He doesn't look like most the pictures I've seen of glass shrimp but is closer to those than amanos. Regardless he seems happy swimming about the tank and the fish don't seem to mind him too much.

Will head over to the welcome page and introduce myself properly shortly,  but thanks for the input :)
Sarah

Various related species are described as "Amano" shrimps. Unlike other species such as the well-known Red Cherry shrimp, none of these will breed in the aquarium as they have to migrate to brackish water to do so. This means that they will all have been imported, probably from southeast Asia, and maybe wild caught. Neither the people catching and exporting them, nor fish shops here, are likely to have the expertise to correctly identify the species of shrimp, which is why you can never be sure of what you are getting.
