Harlequin Colours

Hi all,
Quick question. I've just upgraded to an new tank and invested in a dozen harlies; what stunning fish. I bought 6 from my local MA and the other 6 from another LFS. The MA fish are larger and a deep orange colour once settled, however the other 6 are smaller and more gold in colour. Will they become orange as they mature, or will they always be a more gold colour?

Thanks,
Cod

Assuming they are the same species, they should change colour as they mature. However, there are a couple of reasons why they may not.

The two batches of fish will probably be from different breeders, and they may have each developed a slightly different colour strain. Like you can have white platies, red platies, yellow platies etc.

They may not both be Trigonostigma heteromorpha. But if this is the case, the black patch will be a different shape.

I recall reading that fish from different geographical parts may differ in appearance - see http://www.seriouslyfish.com/species/trigonostigma-heteromorpha/ I saw a different colour morph of these on my last visit to a LFS and almost didn't recognise them as the same fish.

I have also seen the http://www.seriouslyfish.com/species/trigonostigma-espei/ and http://www.seriouslyfish.com/species/trigonostigma-hengeli/ in the same tank as or mis-labelled as harlequin rasboras.

Thanks Sue. They are Trigonostigma heteromorpha I considered espeis and hengelis but decided on 'standard' Harlequins in the end. I did wonder about colour strain. I guess time will tell!

Thanks FCMF too!

I wonder if diet will also have an effect...

You never know what breeders do to make their fish 'prettier'. Feeding certain things to enhance colours is not unknown, then they leave the breeder, stop eating whatever it is and eventually loose the colour enhancement shortly after the fishkeeper has bought them.

I'd forgotten fcmf's comment on regional variation!
