What's your QT routine?

I recently set up a quarantine tank which now houses 4 peppered cories. I read about QTs a bit and it seems the advice on the web varies vastly. Some advocate prophylactic dosing of medicine, others just observe the fish for 2-4 weeks.

What is your routine? Do you dose any meds? Do you add water from your main tank to acclimatise the fish to tank conditions? Or is it a matter of just observing the fish to see if they're healthy?

When I set up a QT I use some water from the tank the fish will be going into, and steal some filter media from that tank too. My QT is 25 litres and I use about 8 or 9 litres of old tank water, the rest new.

I don't medicate unless there is something that needs medicating.

You'll find varying lengths of time on-line for keeping fish in the QT. The most common thing for new fish to come down with is whitespot. Two weeks is enough for this to show. But for things like intestinal worms, the fish need to be quarantined for a couple of months - discus owners quarantine that long for this reason.

Thank you for your reply. I guess I'll keep them in the QT for a few weeks, can't do it for longer as they might outgrow the little tank.
