Gravid spot

 :yikes:
I'm wondering if my two females are pregnant.
From the very start I have been studying all of these WCMM as I was concerned that I had too many males to females so I was looking very hard at the shape of them to try and tell them apart.

Two (possibly three) had a distinct underbelly compared to the rest.

They have been getting noticeably more rounded ( V shaped underneath) and I've just seen that the two bigger ones are much bigger but there doesn't seem to be a gravid spot (although, to be fair I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be seeing!!)

Their bellies are faintly lumpy and the underbelly seems a much brighter silver colour than when I got them. There is a "silver" spot if that counts. You can see it quite distinctly when the fish turns.  They do seem bottom heavy
(or are they just constipated  ;D )

I'm sure it's not overfeeding. I do that once a day and gradually. Watch them eat the first lot and if it goes add another small amount and there is rarely anything left to sink to the bottom. In any case I give them a day a week unfed.

White clouds don't get gravid spots. Only livebearers have this and it is the eyes of the fry showing through the mother's skin. Some deep coloured females never show a gravid spot because the colouration doesn't allow the fry eyes to show through.

White clouds are egg layers; females get egg heavy when ready to breed. Their abdomens do look larger. Also, females of fish like WCMM do tend to have deeper bodies than the more streamlined males.

If memory serves, WCMM are quite easy to breed, it's just stopping the adults eating the eggs/fry that is the problem.

Ah, no gravid spot. That explains why I didn't see them then Doh!!!!

Well, if it isn't constipation, then I think they must be pregnant. We'll see.
I've just said to the other half that I thought they were pregnant and I'm worried. The response was along the lines of you always need something to worry about.

I followed up with, if they were pregnant the tank is too small for any babies they might produce.  ;D

As a joke it fell VERY flat. He's done a Queen Victoria on me.  :rotfl:

You could always feed them some chopped up blanched and shelled peas, if they're still fat after that you know they're pregnant  :)

Strictly speaking, they could be egg bound rather than pregnant since they lay eggs rather than give birth to live fry  ;)
