Gas pockets.

I've been prodding the substrate of my soon to be shrimpery every day since I set it up and wherever I prod I hit a gas pocket. I've got John Innes no 3 topped with fine black aquarium gravel. Obviously when the shrimp go in  don't want to be doing that everyday, it'll stress the shrimp. How long is it safe to leave?

Anyone got any suggestions other than redoing the bloody tank again!

Couldn't you throw some MTS in there to churn the soil? I'm also sure I've also read that shrimp benefit from snail poo.

I have to keep adding ammonia atm to feed the bacteria. I have loads of MTS to chuck in once the shrimp go in. Will them hitting a random pocket affect the shrimp? Considering it's a 60cmx40x30 tank the amount of gas coming off the substrate is worrying me  tad. I'm hoping somebody thats used JI no3 will answer

AFAIK the only time gas pockets are a problem is when they build up to the point that they're constantly leeching into the water column.

Malaysian Trumpets are great because they root around and disturb the gasses and then they vent off in relatively small bubble columns. I doubt the MTS hitting a random pocket would affect the shrimp long-term.

John Innes No3 is the recommended soil in all the usual places on the WWW, so I'm sure if there was a specific issue regarding gas build-up it would come up in a Google search.

Last time it was leeching out, this time not but I've been so paranoid about it happening again I've been prodding every day. I'll leave it a few days and see what happens, like I said before I'm not going to rush to get them in. Thankee Simon  :)
