Hardness ?

Hi having had issues with my new set up....all being resolved soon; I have learnt a lot about PH and water hardness. So looking at the fish profiles I need to know which are ok. My water is 55.96ppm how does that relate to the s,m,h  indicators on the profiles?

I suspect that I may have to rethink my original stocking ideas.

There are a squilion and one different scales that measure water hardness. (ppm, German, French, grains per litre Clarke and others) We cognoscenti usually use degrees German when discussing hardness. There is a calculator on this site which gives us 3.135o (You just divide by 17 point something or other).

OK, your hardness level is 3 degrees German. Now how do you convert this to "hard" or "moderately soft". Well, again, there are a squillion and three different ways of doing this, picking one from Wikipedia:

Classificationhardness in mg/Lhardness in mmol/Lhardness in dGH/°dHhardness in gpghardness in ppm
Soft0–600–0.600.3-3.000-3.50less than 60
Moderately hard61–1200.61–1.203.72-6.753.56-7.0160-120
Hard121–1801.21–1.806.78–10.087.06-10.51120-180
Very hard≥ 181≥ 1.81≥ 10.14≥ 10.57> 180

Your level of 3 falls into the "Soft" or "Pansy" end of the spectrum, my water for example, at 17dGH falls into the "Well Hard" range (Get it "Well Hard" "water"... never mind).  ::)

These ranges are very much illustrative, but whichever conversion ranges you pick, your water at 3dGH will be soft, or even "Very Soft"

Something alse worth considering if you water is very soft its likely that your kh will also be very low aswell , kh helps to buffer against sudden ph drops my kh was a lilttle low aswell somewere between 2 and 3 drops from what i understand this can quite often be maintained by just water changes alone i found that it wasnt quite enough for my tank and i still suffered ph drops  overnight to ph 6.0 or below, if this is the case with your tank there is things can be done to help to rectify it just thought to mention it so you can keep a eye on your ph.

And if your KH is very low it will be very easy for things like Unipac limpopo sand to increase the pH.

If you don't want to go to the expense of buying a KH tester that you'll use once, take a sample of water to a shop and ask them to test it. Remember to ask for the actual number, and which units they are using (as you can see there are several as KH uses the same units as GH) and not something like 'fine' or 'a bit low'.
