Hi folks,

I have a 40 L tank with a Clown pleco and 2 coolie loaches. I was wondering if these fish would a good combination with 2-3 dwarf puffers?

Hi Isadora

I have dwarf puffers, but they are in a species only tank, so I'm probably not the best person to give advice, but I probably wouldn't mix all those fish in a 40L tank.
Fiona also has dwarf puffers, so perhaps she would be a better person to advise you on this. I'm also quite new to fishkeeping (last Oct.) so perhaps the more experienced keepers can offer their advice.

 :)

You seem to be going for "oddball" fish rather than the more normal community fish.

A 40 litre tank is small, too small really for the fish you already have, both clown pleco and coolie loaches really need 60 litre minimum. Coolie loaches also prefer soft water, while dwarf puffers really need harder water. Do you know what water you have? Coolies should also be kept in larger groups, two are likely to be very shy. Puffers can be nippy to other fish, a wriggly coolie loach might look like a long tasty worm .............

My answer would be no, they are not the best of companions, but then I wouldn't have started with the fish you already have in such a small tank.

Richard posted as I was typing and said what I was going to say.

So I will just repeat -
puffers and kuhlis won't mix, you need more kuhlis and a bigger tank.

Edit to add - 18 months ago Isadora lived in Bristol which has hard water.
