There are some people who reckon that carbon makes water clear, but filter wool is also supposed to do that if it is placed last in the water flow.

I haven't used carbon in any of my tanks on a routine basis since I learned several years ago that it isn't actually necessary. But it is a good thing to have in the cupboard - if you ever have to medicate the tank, it removes the medication once the treatment has finished.

The filters on both mine and the grandsons Aquanano tanks are constantly stopping the water filling up in the back compartments, to the extent that in order to keep the lower opening of the power filter covered we've had to raise the carbon and ceramic filters slightly which to my mind defeats the object.

On my tank I have reversed the power filter until I sort something else out.
That worked for one day then it was back to raising the ceramic filter again.

I took the carbon one out and because I'm still cycling the tank and I thought the filter would possibly have my good bacteria on it I wasn't brave enough to remove it completely so it is currently in the main tank.
I did replace it with a Fluvel open sponge, which also serves the purpose of blocking the outlet vents from my little fish, should I ever get any!

I did ask Aquaone if it was OK to leave their filters out and swap them and got the reply along the lines of "Go for it"
