There are two possibilities to not shocking the fish. Neither are particularly useful for someone with lots of fair sized tanks.

Leave enough water standing overnight for the entire water change(s) (In your case you might need a swimming pool sized container ;D )

Do several small water changes a week rather than one big one. The smaller the water change, the less new water that goes in so the smaller the effect on the tank's pH.

I was wondering if those options would be the answer.  ;D  Time to start parking a tanker in the driveway then.

I think I may have to get more water containers anyway, but perhaps smaller and/or more frequent changes will be easier. I think I'll have to try a few scenarios and see what fits in with my schedule.

Even now I don't clean & perform water changes on all tanks on the same day, because it takes most of the day, so I've taken to doing 2 or 3 tanks each evening. I think I should be able to store enough water for that, which could also be used for one tank in an emergency.  :)

I'd forgotten about alder cones, I even have a bag of them in the cupboard  :-[
@Sue - are the alder cones quite rough-edged or do they soften up once in water for a bit? I was getting some and boiling them beforehand - would that soften up sufficiently not to damage a fish? Just conscious that I've already got one fish with a long-term injury/marking on her side and don't want to cause any further injury to her or anyone else in the tank.

All I do with them is wash under the tap to get rid of any dusty bits then put them in the tank. They float at first but sink after a few days.
When they get old, they lose bits so I try to remove them when I see the odd bit falling off. If left too long they disintegrate when you try to pick them up.

I've never had a fish get injured by doing this. I'd be worried about them disintegrating too quickly if they were boiled.
