It depends on what fish you have in the tank. Cherry shrimp will be eaten by largish fish; baby cherry shrimp will be eaten by even small fish. Amanos are bigger and can look after themselves to some extent, but again will be eaten by large fish. But I have both species and they are quite good at eating algae.
All shrimp are in danger when they moult. They have to shed their skins in order to grow, and they are very vulnerable while the new skin is hardening. They will need somewhere to hide during the process.

ive just got some tuxedo platys, neons and moscow guppies. was thinking along the lines of the amano shrimp. ive got some bogwood that some fish hide in but i suppose if the fish hide in it then the shrimp wont be safe there either...

Hello jwc. I have found that ottocinclus are excellant algae eaters on plants. They will also remove it from gravel as in my aquarium. They clean my broad leaf and feather like leaf plants without damaging them. I know these are not shrimps but if you can fit them in you won't be dissappointed.  ;)

Amanos would be fine with those fish. I have found over the years that platies, guppies and neons don't hide in caves, they much prefer plants given the chance.
The amanos would also like those plants with fine leaves (eg hornwort or cabomba) to hide in during moulting.

Nerite snails are also good algae eaters.
