That's interesting to know. Shame, I liked my holey rocks (well, stones!)  :(

I believe the recommended method is to put the rocks on the tank bottom when you are setting up the tank, then arrange the gravel or sand around them so that there is no substrate actually underneath the rocks. I did that with my bogwood.
