Title: Angel fish have spawned
Post by: Mad_BMS on June 14, 2015, 12:13:48 PM
I am becoming convinced that the work on testing and water changes is worthwhile as my angels spawned yesterday just after a 30% water change and glass and gravel clean. Never happened when I kept them back in late 60s early 70s.
They have laid the eggs on a broad leaf and set up a no gocube around it. The third angel banished to otherwise tank. It is amazing watching the care of the eggs by both parent fish and how they are persuading others to leave the area. The cardinal tetras however are managing an occasional meal of egg but all part food chain I would like to see some fry though and what care they give to them. Feel second tank syndrome coming on and this may win Linda over as she sees the eggs disappearing

If it is the first time they've spawned they might eat the eggs themselves. Cichlids commonly do this the first few times before finally getting the hang of things. Watching the parents care for the eggs and then fry is amazing to watch (even though my fish were apistos, the behaviour is the same).

If you have three angels, watch that the confirmed pair don't make life difficult for number three.

Hi Sue we have been having that conversation today about the third. It is staying out the way but reading today now realise they are monogamous therefore they might make it difficult for what I assume is another female as there has been no obvious aggression guess watch this space. They have now cleared all the obvious white eggs which I understand are infertile and concentrated rest as a clump of 50-60 from the 100+ I estimate last night One parent is a more of a gaurd than the other but we have been out so they may be taking turns but only seen such attention before when I bred a pair of Siamese fighters many years ago and of course it was the male only in that case. Fascinating!!!

Oh well decided I better feed the fish last night and this distracted the guarding parent as  she\ he nipped off to get a bite the cardinals nipped in for some eggs. They were all gone next time I looked and parent was still cleaning and guarding leaf. This went on for a couple of hours with a bit of chasing the third angel by the gaurd. This morning all is back to normal and the three of them seem to be swimming throughout the tank now and even together at times Now I only need to convince Linda we need a QT\breeding tank its where to put it though as we live in a very small bungalow😀
