Advice on stock

Hi Folks apologies not been here in a while despite having started hobby again 3-4 years ago and getting some good advice here at that time. Reason well tank stabilised and enjoyed fish I had. Then 4 months ago disaster lost half my stock don't know why think some sort infection. Anyway treated and tank now stable started to restock. From signature you can see what I have now mainly tetras as down to 7 platy's (original fish had 50 at one point when they bred lol).
What I would like to ask is I now feel while I am fond of tetras and could try more I am beginning to see a lack of bigger fish. I was considering gourami of some sort. Would not mind advice now on what would be suitable and a bit larger to view in the tank ( Corys and Plecs rarely seen now assume more active at night). Any suggestions?
thanks
Tom

How about pearl gouramis? All gouramis are on the aggressive, territorial side but this species is at the more peaceful end of the spectrum. The others of about the same size - gold, blue, opaline - are all colour morphs of the three spot gourami, one of the more aggressive ones.
Or, if you could find any, thick lipped gouramis.

Thanks Sue had looked at Pearl Gourami last week was actually why I mentioned them. One worry you say they are all agressive does this mean they may nip at the Siamese Fighter? He is relatively new and in great condition and has no other fish paying him any attention just now. It s a big tank though with planted areas and caves to hide in. As well as the fairly large clear swimming area that I feel needs the presence of bigger fish.

Gouramis and bettas don't make good tank mates.
Having said that bettas are not really suited to community tanks, they are much better off in a 25-ish litre tank on their own. There are a couple of reasons. Bettas have been bred for centuries to be aggressive and they secrete aggression pheromones and allomones which the other fish pick up and this stresses them. And secondly, fish like tetras have lots of tiny teeth, which they often use to shred the betta's fins. Many otherwise non-nippy fish just can't help themselves when faced with a betta's long flowing fins.
So, if this was my tank I would get a small tank, cycle it or steal some media from the main tank's filter, move the betta into that and then get some gouramis.

I like the look of the Pearl Gourami but as I am having tetras I might get these for the smaller tank that will be in my dining room eventually.  :fishy1: :fishy1:

No evidence of either Beta or tetras showing any interest in each other in over a week. Indeed it was in a tank with penguin tetras when I first saw it and I paid another 2 visits to shop watching their behaviour for a while before buying.

Been trying to convince my wife about a second tank for 2 years don't think I will win that afraid. Guess may have to leave getting anything bigger though. Reading elsewhere I thought was only when tetras were in small numbers they got nippy and  have shoals of at least 10. Will watch for a bit then before getting anything else I guess obviously Barbara you don't think Gourami and tetras make good bedfellows either.

It is quite common for bettas to live peaceably with other fish for months, then they snap and go on a killing spree. Something to watch out for.
