Oooo thank you Simon, I only spotted it by chance. Mind you the chance of getting a pair was also amazingly small. The vid really doesnt do justice to their colours, they're really very beutiful, much more so than the sparkling gouramis

The male has been guarding the nest all day most diligently.

He won't even move away to eat, I was just watching him while I put the food in and he hasn't taken his eyes off the nest

Great video and really interesting to watch. (Comment noted about sparkling gouramis which were on a potential "future fish" list.)

Well I had a little nose in the tank just now and the male isn't just guarding, he's babysitting. He won't anything near the nest, even the female gets gently warned away. I also saw him stick his nose right out the water to swim on top of a surface leaf and I wondered what the heck he was doing and then realised he's catching fry. At first I thought he was eating them but then realised he's collecting up strays and spitting them back out into the bubble nest!

This has kind of scuppered my plans for the 200l a bit, I was going to redo it Monday. The sand and gravel arrived today and the soils coming tomorrow. I have no idea how to get the other fish in the QT out without disturbing the bubble nest. If only they'd had a wee bit of patience.

Amazing behaviour, it must be fascinating to watch him rounding up the little ones.
Shame it has scuppered your plans for re-working the large tank though.
Actually, you know the answer to your QT problem - another tank!  ;)

I've done a little bit of reading up and the males get 'bored' with looking after the fry after a few days. More likely worn out I would say as the nest can contain between 150-200 eggs.

I'm going to enjoy watching the behaviour and let nature take it's course, the QT is stuffed with plants so there'll be plenty of places to hide and they can graze on the biofilm. I actually want more of these fish as they're so pretty and the ones in the tank with the sparkling gouramis at MA are far too small at the moment to tell whats what. I only managed to chose these 2 as they were big enough to show the tiny spot on their heads. That's all that differentiates them from the sparklers in the display tank.

Following your success, I'm going to see if I can get my sparklers to breed - ill pick up some Brazilian pennywort to use as an additional floating plant as the frogbit currently always gets attracted to the filter outlet and they don't like the flow.  Slightly worried that the amount of light reaching the other plants below will reduce too far to enable them to grow, so this might involve a bit of rearranging the layout too.  :D any excuse  ::)

In other news, I'm desperately trying to convince my wife that we should upgrade our tank to a custom one to fit the sideboard after the summer holidays - think I need to show her that whilst she may think it won't be that much bigger, it almost doubles the volume...  I'm hoping this will allow me to increase the number of sparklers (I've got three currently).  My main risk is the rams interfering with any bubble nests, they are my personal favourites (sparklers coming a very close second  :) It's the different characters of fish that 'do it' for me) but they can also wake up on the wrong side of the [tank] and get a bit stroppy.  ::)

I bought some riccia yesterday and thats now floating over the surface hopefully providing more hiding places when they leave the nest. I also bought some liquifry 1 seeing as I have different fry in 2 tanks. I had a chat with Tom at MA yesterday and he'll take any excess fish from me so thats one worry over. There's a heck of a lot of little tails waggling in that nest

Fiona, that's fantastic. Glad to hear that there are lots of little tails waggling, and also glad that you have somewhere to take them when they are bigger.  :)
Well, that is if you don't get another tank and keep them all.  ;)

Once Tom said he'd take them, I decided to give nature a helping hand. A tank full of croakers would be pretty amazing, especially when the males started displaying and croaking at each other but get thee behind me @Littlefish  :rotfl: 4 fish tanks and a food tank are quite enough for me  ;D
