Just a couple of shrimp piccies to show the differences in colour between 2 of my females. I'm aiming to breed them all solid red.

Good photos, the second shrimp looks almost orange when compared to the first.

Lovely photos!

I'd love to be able to keep shrimps but the little ones would just end up as food.

I might see about getting some of the larger species of Amano shrimp as they should be too large to be eaten. They're nowhere near as attractive as the shrimp in Fiona's photos though.

I have a red cherry shrimpery, and 10 amanos in my 125l community. It is true that the cherries look better, but the amanos more than make up for it with their antics and industrious activity. The females from my original batch, are now the biggest things in the tank. They will happily try and compete with the boisterous glowlight danios for food. They would comfortably steal a pellet from a cory. If they can get to "easier" fish food, then the algae becomes second best, otherwise they are cleaning machines, and rarely seem to stop.

However, I think it is important to have a good number, and a mixture of sizes, if, for example, you need algae cleaning from smaller or thinner leaves.

The dark red ones came from the MA manager's collection, he called them a sakura shrimp, the males are also heavily coloured. The orange ones are from a different supplier and were labelled as red cherry shrimps, the males are a muddy orange colour. I also have one or two semi transparent female cherries from yet another supplier.

I found an interesting article on shrimp grading here, however I'm not sure how accurate it is http://www.aquaticquotient.com/forum/showthread.php/74217-Grading-system-of-Cherry-to-Fire-Red-Shrimps

I couldn't believe it when the female landed in the middle of that moss ball, she was almost posing for me. I'm very pleased with that piccy :)

Hello Fiona,

That's a useful website, thanks.

My guess is that the "grading" of RCS is just a marketing tool used by breeders when they have produced a "redder" shrimp than before. If you look at some of the websites, you can see various "new" names selling at very high prices.

It's only going to be a short while until the "painted fire red sakura bloody mary pillar box whatever" becomes the standard ...... at standard prices.

My 4 recent additions have dark red bodies and legs, (which the original ones, bought 10 months ago, certainly didn't). They were marked in the LFS as "Red Cherry Shrimps" at 4 for £10.

The sakura I got from the MA manager were 6 for a tenner and have solid red colouration all over. The semi-transparent ones were £2.95 each or 3 for £7, the orange ones were ridiculously expensive so I got 2.

It's a supply and demand market I guess. Hopefully I won't need to buy anymore for a while.

I'd quite like a few of those "painted fire red sakura bloody mary pillar box whatever" shrimp to go into a tank with the shoal of shenanigans from the other thread. I think that would made a lovely display.
I'd just need to add a snail pooping Olaf singing "let it go" (similar to the one Paddy has), and the "farting naked bottom" air bubbler from MA, and that would be me done. My collection would be complete.  ;D
