What exactly do you mean by clownfish, the marine fish as in Finding Nemo or clown loach?

If you mean the first one, no, it needs salt water.
If you mean the loach, no, it needs a 6 foot tank and a group of at least 6.

What about something like a coolie loach? They are the right colours  :), but the wrong shape  :(, suitable for soft water and are a bit unusual.

Although this site says they hide in the substrate all day, others suggest that if you provide sheltered spots and have a group of 6 or more, they will congregate in favourite spots.

Ah ok, I was on about the Clownfish as in Nemo from Finding Nemo. I had read they were from the Tropical Pacific but couldn't find info on fresh or salt water as their preferred environment. Does anyone on the forum keep a marine/saltwater aquarium?

Littlefish, I am keen on investing in a plec, I will definitely shop around and see of I can get a look at them and maybe price them up  8)

I haven't read a lot about loaches, apparently certain types are suitable for an 80cm tank... If this is the case they could be a future addition  :) :) :)

Both the dwarf/clown plec and coolie loach are suitable for minimum tank size of 60cm, according to the profiles on this site. I just thought finding something with similar colouring to a clown fish would be the closest you could get without setting up a marine tank - or you could set up a marine tank before your daughter's birthday and get her a clown fish as a present - multi tank syndrome here we come... ;D

You think that's a bad influence...... :o
A friend has just sent me this link about an amazing garden pond
http://sweetpets.tv/fish-enjoy-a-surrounding-pond-view-when-they-swim-into-an-anti-gravity-tank/
and asked me to convince her that she shouldn't get one.

 :o :o :o Wow! How cool is that???  8) 8) 8)

Is it an optical illusion but in the video on that page does the "anti-gravity tank" sway/move back and forth? Looked a bit precarious for a sec.... But that is pretty smart  :fishy1:

I couldn't work out if it was the camera, or if the tank was swaying.
I also can't imagine how it works either.
It would be great to have one in the garden though.

It seems to rely on being throughly sealed to the outside air... A bit like submerging a glass in the bath, inverting it and the glass holding the water inside it above the water level. Very simple principle but when you see it like that with fish inside it does get you going "oooooooooooohhh"

They seem to enjoy the view!

Day 7 of the cycle. Full 3ppm dose of Ammonia added 24 hours ago.

pH = 7.6
Ammonia/NH3 = 1.5ppm
Nitrite/NO2 = 0ppm
Nitrate/NO3 = >40ppm

Nothing added to water today. The tank is not fully cycled as both ammonia and nitrite levels have not reached zero within 24 hours.

It appears that I have more nitrite eaters than ammonia eaters at the moment  ;D

Not necessarily  :)

You have enough nitrite eaters to cope with the amount of nitrite being made by the ammonia eaters. That's your bottle neck at the moment, the ammonia -> nitrite stage. You obviously do have some nitrite eaters since half the ammonia has gone with no sign of nitrite.

Your cycle is not going to follow the method closely because of the Safe Start and mature media  :)

Yeah you've confirmed what I thought Sue, I'd say the mature media and/or the safestart really must have done the trick. I can't get any nitrite readings and the ammonia is dropping so it's definitely moving along nicely.

From this point, I should wait until I get zero ammonia and zero nitrite, then add 3ppm ammonia. Then if within 24 hours both readings are zero I can do a big water change then go get fish, right?

I obviously realise it probably won't happen by tomorrow but so long as I get two double zero's in 24 hours with a 3ppm Ammonia dose in the middle then it's good to go?

I would go from stage 10. Test every day and when you have ammonia below 0.25 and nitrite below 1.0 add 3ppm and test next day. Which is what you said  :) Going by your current readings it shouldn't be long now.

Cheers Sue, fingers crossed  :)

I went to Pets at Home with my trusty notebook, just to start pricing up fish. The plants they sell are typically £6 a bunch of 3 mix 'n' match but they don't break them down into species, I reckon I'll just get a selection and see how I go.

Harlequins 5 for £8
Rummy nose Tetra 6 for £12
Cherry Barb 5 for £6
Electric Blue Ram 2 for £18

So looking at £44 for my initial stock if I stick to it plus plants, so closer to £60 to get me going. Just need the cycle to finish now!  :) :) :)

Hell yeah LF, thank you, it can't come fast enough but I'm in no way going to jump the gun. Fish will go in only once it's successfully cycled. I'll be visiting other LFS's tomorrow. Only had time to go to P@H today but doubt I'll use them.

The plants at P@H tend to be bog standard and the ones I saw in my nearest shop didnt look that healthy either but half the fun is looking.
