Thanks all.
I'm glad I've had a go at live plants, the fish find them much easier t swim through that the artificial ones.
The betta also has a newly planted 34L tank and seems quite comfortable.
Next job is to move the axolotls, which is not going to be easy, but I need to free up the corner of the room that the juvenile axolotls are currently in for the (cough, cough,  :-[ ) new tank (cough).

Good to read the perspective of someone who's moved from silk > live plants.
Haha - I really can't keep up with you and your tanks and their inhabitants; you'll need to put them in your 'signature'.

I can't keep up with my tanks either as they are moving around a lot at the moment.
When I first got the platy and zebra danio from P@H I wasn't thinking any further than setting those tanks up. Then as I got into looking at the fish profiles etc. I decided that I really, really, really wanted reticulated hillstream loaches, because I liked the way they looked & moved. Since then I have been distracted by dwarf puffers, axolotls, etc., but finally the new tank (340L) for that corner of the room is dedicated as a hillstream tank, and I can finally get around to setting it up (assuming I don't get distracted again). I have found a reticulated hillstream loach supplier and can order/collect them when required, and it's only just over an hour drive.
As for plants, I've gone from plastic, to silk, to live plants. If only I'd planned everything properly I probably would have saved a lot of time and money, but at least this way has given me a chance to get used to keeping the fish and work towards the final set ups, whilst learning from what people were saying here.

Wow, how many tanks do you have now?  There will soon be no room left for you.

Glad you are enjoying your planted tanks.  I enjoy looking at mine even when you can't see the fish.

As below, there are 19 fish and 4 shrimp in there somewhere!

Thanks Colin. I had seen the PFK article, and had found some information on how to make a river manifold, but the other article has a lot more detailed information on making a manifold, so that will be really useful.  ;D

Anne, I've given up counting tanks for now because at least 2 (probably 3) of the 70L tanks are going to be made redundant. One currently just holds the live plants as I buy them and before I plant them, 2 tanks are running with no inhabitants, and one us being used to breed pond snails for the puffers, so none of them really count.

I see you have the same problem with your tank as I do with mine. I can see some fish in yours. I swear there are lots of fish in mine, but as soon as I get my phone out they all disappear. Nippy little beggars.  ;D

Finally got a picture of the blue-eyed ancistrus. He's slightly more timid that the standard bristlenose, but I guess that's the difference between sharing a tank with tiger barbs and sharing a tank with less boisterous fish. I'm hoping things will be better when he grows a bit, and when they get transferred to a 125L tank in a few months.

He's growing more bold today and has been shimmying along the glass at the front of the tank, even with the tiger barbs swimming around. So pleased that he seems to be settling in.  :)

There's something very, very endearing about that cute little eye looking up. [...written while glancing, yet again, around the room to see if/where space could be made for another tank...]

I've been growing algae on small rocks in the snail tank on the windowsill for a while.
I moved one of the rocks into the 125L tank, and it didn't take long for the bristlenose to find it. :)

That is really cool... How do I do this? I don't have either tank in direct sunlight....?

Bet your wee bristlenose is having the time of his life

Any glass container on a windowsill, add a few drops of ammonia and Bob's yer uncle

The bristlenose and the blue-eyed ancistrus have a rock in each of their tanks and seem to enjoy them. I have more in the snail tank to replace/rotate them.
Very few of my tanks get direct sunlight even for a short time, so moving the snail tank seemed to be an option as I thought they wouldn't mind a bit of algae either.
I think I may have read something about growing algae on rocks in another tank somewhere on here a while ago, when I was looking for information for catfish when planning the hill stream tank, before I got distracted by everything else.
