Title: My attempts at live plants
Post by: Sue on May 07, 2014, 07:39:48 PM
I have been inspired by all those planted tanks to attempt to grow some in my tank. I recently got some hornwort, which I know does not have to be planted and can be grown as a floating plant. I have used it to decorate the piece of redmoor wood in the style of Christmas tree garlands. Don't laugh, it has worked.

And you can see some of the dwarf rainbow fish  :D

Yep, hornwort is great and tying it down seems to be to its liking even if there is a fastish filter flow, which the floating version of the plant doesn't seem to like. Don't try to plant it in the substrate though.

Looks great Sue! I want to get some new plants as my java fern died recently for some reason.  I might try doing that with my  hornwort though.  I like that plant but prefer how you've done it to floating like mine

Thank you all.

The piece of redmoor wood is all spikey branches and it occurred to me that I could wind the hornwort round them. As the stems grow I wind them round a bit more. I got 5 stalks off Ebay as I can't get to shops too easily at the moment. They have shot up, I've even had to prune them, the prunings went in the 50 litre tank tank just floating.

I also tried Richard's idea, and have 2 clumps of amazon sword growing in terracotta pots. You can just make out the end of a leaf on the left. And of course the java fern on the plastic log.

One day I might even be able to get rid of those two silk plants. I need them at the moment to give the fish somewhere to hide.
