Here is my first 'big' tank, 180l, waiting for the fish. Looking a bit zen garden at the moment :-)

Good lookin' tank. Are you planning on anymore plants and decorations? It makes the fish feel safer if they've got somewhere to hide. Even something simple like terracotta plant pots strewn around can look good and give them something to nose into.

Thanks Colin. I have a rock and more wood, so I'll play around with these. I might get more plants as well.

2nd take, added another piece of bogwood with a few nooks and crannies at the back and spread out the plants a bit, so they just need to do some growing!

Thank you Resa. It's perfect for us as it fits at the end of the sofa and we can spend hours fish gazing in comfort :) Also I like that it looks a bit like a wide-screen movie screen with the black strips top and bottom. There are other lovely looking tanks though...

Thank you for your kind comments, they are very encouraging! I think the clarity comes from the light setup, I'm really happy how the light works on this tank.

Thanks Colin. I shot quite a few to get some decent ones. I like to play with the camera. I wish I had a macro lens to get in closer, it would be even harder to get a sharp picture though.

Great pics! I can never get my fish to pose like that......  ;)

Are you using a decent DSLR or just something like a standard compact? Do you use specific settings or go with luck??

What fish do you have? I recognise a few but can't name them! I can't work out if you have endlers or guppies!

I can tell you what they are:

1. dwarf chain loach, Ambastaia sidthimunki (previously Botia sidthimunki and Yasuhikotakia sidthimunki)
2. male guppy and platy
3. male guppy
4. male guppy and two platies
5. cardinal tetras.

You can tell the guppies are not endlers because of the size of their tails (or its tail, not sure if they're al the same fish!) And it's male because of the size of the tail. And I've seen that colour pattern called Spanish skirt because of the resemblance to a flamenco dancer's dress with it's layers of ruffles.
The platies, I think they're all males. Either that or they're females with clamped anal fins.
Cardinals - the blue does not go right into the tail so they're not green neon tetras; and the red goes all along the underside so they're not neon tetras which only have red at the back.

Thanks dbaggie, they don't know how to sit for portraits but I'm working on them  :vcross:

I have a DSLR, it's sort of bottom of the range Nikon D3100, but it's still a great camera. The lens makes a difference, it's a fixed focus 50mm 1.8f which I love. I use it almost exclusively with the large aperture 1.8, which gives me a shallow depth of field. It throws everything in front and behind subject out of focus so it creates effect of focus play between sharp and soft and it isolates subject from the background (or foreground). I also use selective focus, which is called "Single-point AF" on a Nikon. It lets you select the point for focusing. Otherwise camera will choose a focus point, which would be something you don't wont, i.e. some leaves at the foreground. Another thing I do is rack the ISO sensitivity high (about 3200 ISO) to get short shutter speed. Fish are so fast you really need to use about 1/2000 of a second to freeze the motion. I haven't tried "Sport photography" setting, but it may work.

Thanks jesnon. I was struggling to get a decent photograph on a smaller tank I had, which had weaker lights. On Rio lights are much brighter so that makes a big difference.

I like the flamenco dance reference! :)

4. The silver platy with red tail is a female, by the way. I won't tell her she was mistaken for a boy!  :-X
