That's really good info on taking piccies. I'll have to see what settings I've got on my camera to see if I can follow that. Nice one!

I agree - I haven't got a DSLR unfortunately (keep meaning to get one!) but I have got a decent enough compact that does let you faff with a good number of settings so I'll do the same as Colin and see how close I can get

Great tips them Pawel - managed to take some of my best fish pics to-date. Still, a bit more practice needed though (and perhaps a better camera!) :)

Great photos dbaggie! Thanks for sharing. I'm glad I was of some help  :)

The fish in the first picture look serious, what are they?

Brilliant pictures! I'm starting to get a bit envious. I think my aqua nano 40 is great, but too small! Does anyone have any advice on how to persuade a husband that I need a new, bigger tank? Note - emphasis on 'need', not 'would like'?  ???

They're Dwarf Rainbowfish; the main one in shot is a male with the other two being females. They're great fish - my favourites along with the Cardinal's. There's also a male Celestial Pearl Danio loitering in the background.

Thanks Diz. Can't help with your conundrum though - I was the one who wanted the tank, rather than the missus!

Take him to the fish shop and ask to pick a fish for your tank. There is a chance there will be one he really likes and so you will NEED to upgrade, especially if it's a shoaling type, to be able to accommodate it!  :P

What do you like about your rainbow fish? I'm looking for new additions to my tank. What are your Celestial Pearl Danios like? They look good on pictures, but I haven't seen one in flesh.

I'm a fan of shoaling fish generally (hence the Cardinal's) and whilst the Dwarf Rainbow fish don't shoal tightly, they do tend to swim around in a loose group, are very active and spend quite a lot of time at the front of the tank making for a good spectacle. They're also a decent size for a mid-range tank allowing you a nice size shoal without blowing your stocking limits.

The CPD's are lovely but really quite small and this does mean they can get a bit 'lost' sometimes in a larger tank (mine is of similar dimensions to yours).

I saw some CPDs yesterday that must have been more mature or well looked after than the other more dull ones I've seen they really are gorgeous fish but yes quite small. .. I'm used to small fish though with my little tank!

If I was you Diz, I'd just buy it and when he asks about it, look innocent and say "what this old thing?  Had it AGES"   Well, it works with clothes  :rotfl:

Oh but you're a devious lot!
Having said that, I might just take your advice - though large tank may be slightly more difficult to explain than new jumper? Still, once it's there what can he do?

I had just the one tank for 10 years. Then my husband agreed to me getting a bigger tank. He assumed I meant instead of the first tank, but I just set up the second and kept the first running as well. Though now I come to think of it, that's not quite true  ???. I had a quarantine tank that I had some fish in. The fish from the smaller tank were moved to the new bigger one (together with filter media) and I moved the fish from the QT into the smaller tank (again together with media). Then somehow I bought a betta, set up the QT and didn't manage to move the betta out of it. Then of course I had to buy a new QT once he got used to the idea of a betta in his own tank. I've managed to resist putting fish in there permanently for quite a long time  ;)

Oh I like that, a step-by-step approach! I could just tell him that my tank is actually a quarantine tank and, now that the fish are OK they need to move into their permanent tank, which just happens to be bigger?!

OK, how bad is this? I've just agreed to hubby ordering a £500 road bike (he's a very keen cyclist). The payback is that I have £500 in reserve to spend on myself. I work from home ( garage converted to an office) and I work very long hours, so I need something to provide relaxation and distraction from my very demanding editing work. That gives me £500 to spend on anything I like. I don't like to think of myself as manipulative, just practical. I'm currently considering what I might spend my £500 on. Does anyone have any suggestions? LOL  ;D

You weren't by any chance considering a... well I hate to say it really... a nice large new... it's really so indelicate, and we barely know each other... But how about... Shhh!... a new tank!!!   NOW you've gone and done it. :yikes:

You've got to have something to do while he's out playing on his new bike.... and remember; a new bike will require new pedals and tools and tyres and cycling clothes etc etc.... so I think that £750 would be a more realistic amount to spend on errr, ummmm, ooooo, weeeeellllll, perhaps a new tank or something similar.

Well, I think that sounds very reasonable. A new tank, you say? What a great suggestion. I had no idea how useful this forum was going to be when I joined it!  :)

The usual advice to male aquarists is to tell the other half to go out and buy some new shoes then say, well you just spent a fortune on shoes so I'm getting a new tank. You have just done the female aquarist version of that with the road bike  ;D
