So, our fish of the week is...

The Galaxy Rasbora

Quote
The Galaxy Rasbora has had a lively, if short, history since its discovery in 2006. The fish was found in a very small high altitude area in Myanmar, and instantly became very popular as an aquarium fish. Unfortunately, over collecting has devestated its environment, and the fish has become very rare in its natural location. - See more at: http://www.thinkfish.co.uk/fish/galaxy-rasbora.html

Enjoy!

They are lovely little fish. At least they are now being bred in captivity, and I'm sure I read somewhere that a new wild population had been discovered....

Can I make a suggestion for the next fish of the week?

Honey gouramis, here in the fish profiles.
The only 'problem' is that the photos in the profile are of the wild colouration which is very hard to find in the shops because the females are a "boring" grey beige. Honey gouramis are most commonly sold in the yellow and red man-made colours (made by selective breeding, nothing nasty).
here is a comment in the profile about the bottom picture being of the red sunset form - this dates back to when the photos included several small ones down the right side of the main photo; it is not there now.

What a perfectly lovely fish!

When I grow up and can afford a bigger tank I will get some of these!

Good idea about the gouramis sue.

Galaxy rasboras, now more correctly called celestial pearl danios, can be kept in quite small tanks. I've tried to check with seriously fish but it won't load (again!)

CPDs are a fish that took the fishkeeping world by storm as soon as it was discovered a few years ago, and well before the taxonomists finished (or even started) their work. As a result, both the latin and common names have changed. You'll find them called galaxy rasboras, firework rasboras, celestial pearl danios, not to be confused with pearl danios; Rasbora (or Microrasbora) sp galaxy, Celestichthys margaritatus, Danio margaritatus etc etc.

I have kept celestial pearl danios in the past, lovely fish :) Kept them in a planted tank in a group of 6 and they seemed quite happy.

IIRC these were one of the few fish recommended that would fit in my little Fluval edge which is a 23l. Unfortunately I think they weren't well suited to my water so I got my little endlers. Really lovely little fish.

Staying on the theme of small fish I love these:

I'm posting on my phone so apologies if that doesn't work

Seriously fish recommend a minimum tank size as having a base of at least 45 x 30cm for celestial pearl danios (galaxy rasboras)

Lovely looking fish - haven't come across any of these in any of the fish shops I've visited. Are they quite rare?

I'm not sure how rare they are but I've seen them in a local shop in Bristol, and in Aquajardin in Southampton but I can't comment on any more than that!

I think they're lovely, too. A tank with those at the top and these......

(Peacock Goby)

....at the bottom would be a good looking spectacle. IMHO, of course.

Some lovely pics of others here folks

Any preferences for this week?

A nice Barb perhaps?

Have a look at the fish profiles and pick a fave!

Or make another suggestion... ;)

How about the Cherry Barb. A very 'versatile' fish and the boys look great when they flare their fins at each other and the barbie girls. They're not fussy about about water hardness, big range of temperatures (mine are at 22°) and mine even had kids! They're OK for smallish tanks (say 60litres) too.

Liking these as well - does anyone know if they get on with Dwarf Gourami's? Although the profile states that they're peaceful, they do seem to have some similarities in colouration and I've heard that DG's can be aggressive towards any fish which looks similar?
