Title: Eco 100 Tank - 200L project
Post by: daniel_james_taylor on May 19, 2013, 05:19:08 PM
So ive started my new 200L project and thought I would post updates on the forum as I go along. Rather exited as this is my first 'large' aquarium!

Eco 100 Tank & Cabinet:
•   Tank dimensions: 100cm x 40cm x 50cm
•   AquaManta EFX 300 external filter
•   2 x 39w T5 lights & 300w heaterstat

Stocking plan im still not fully decided on however aiming for Angel fish to be the main feature.

The pics so far are set-up and planting. (Set-up started last week on Sunday)

Looks great so far. I like the big and bold decor.

Scale wise you are identical to my own tank, and I note you've gone for an over-sized AquaManta 300 instead of the lesser 200, which is what I have on mine.  Displacement with my own decor is about 20ltr making the Roma 200 a 180ltr max, so still plenty of capacity.  Looking at the much bigger rock and very large wood pieces I'm going to say you'll be a lot closer to 150ltr. Have you measured the actual capacity with the decor in the tank to give you a baseline?

Thanks! Yeh i thought more filtration was better so upgraded the filter. I havn't measured the displacement however had guestimated between 40-50L. The drift wood is fairly substantial and I intend to grow alot of plants/moss off it :) What style/bio type aquarium have you done with your Roma 200?

Too right, I haven't seen anything that big for sale up my local area. Looks jolly heavy.

My thread is in the Plants section, last week's post is right here [click (http://www.thinkfish.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,161.msg3463.html#msg3463)] with pics. Reminds me, I have to update it tonight too.

The drift wood was from maidenhead aquatics, they had alot of substantial sized pieces. I tried it stood upright (was too tall!) and up at an angle however it just didnt look right. The plants and moss (to be added) will hopefully soften the look :) . Had a look at your tank TigzFish and i like what you have done on the left corner, what rock type is that?

I use Maidenhead myself (Standish near Wigan), love the place.  They do have some wood, but I haven't seen anything that big, it looks fab.  Glad you like the left corner, that's the theme I'm changing too bit by bit.  The large rock is Ocean Rock, and by heck it's heavy  ;D

Ive just calculated the displacement of water the drift wood creates (lifted it out of the water , measured the drop in water level, worked out at just over 12Litres (i was supprised how little displacement considering the size of it). I didn't do the rocks as I didn't want to disrupt the plants.

Thanks Resa :)

Update for today - little bit of brown algae has started growing on the amazon swords. Im intending to get some more plants and conduct some daily small water changes to starve out any nutrients the algae is using. Ive also gently rubbed most of the algae off the amazon swords.

I hear brown algae is more common in newly set up tanks, is there a reason for this?
Title: Re: Eco 100 Tank - 200L project
Post by: Sue on May 22, 2013, 07:49:51 PM
The brown algae is usually diatoms. The reason it is common in new tanks is ammonia. Whether it's a fish-in or fishless, there is more ammonia in the water during cycling and this encourages diatoms.
Though you haven't menntioned doing either type of cycle yet...........?

Hi Sue,

thanks for the info, Im planning on doing a fish-in cycle, I havn't done fishless on previous tanks before. I have used some ceramic noodles from my other aquarium to help seed the new filter.

Post by: Sue on May 23, 2013, 09:00:16 AM
Questions - have you moved the noodles into the new tank yet and if you have, are you feeding the bacteria on the noodles with ammonia/fish food?

It's just that you said

Quote
I have used some ceramic noodles

implying you've already put them in there, and

Quote
Im planning on doing a fish-in cycle

implying you haven't actually got any fish yet.

If there is no source of ammonia in the new tank, if you have moved the noodles the bacteria on them will starve. The noodles should be put in the new filter at the same time you get the first fish.

The other thing to bear in mind that even with mature media, you'll only be able to get a few fish. If you move a quarter of the media from the existing tank, you should get fish equal to just under a quarter of the amount of fish in the mature tank (just under a quarter because there will also be a tiny amount of bacteria on the other surfaces of the mature tank so a quarter of the media will have a bit less than a quarter of the bacteria population)

Hi Sue,

Yes I put some noodles accross when I set up the tank 2 weeks ago and I have been adding very small amounts of fish food to feed the bacteria. I haven't added any fish yet and I will put some more noodles accross when I add a few fish.

Im also still not 100% sure on what fish I want to add, im looking at south/central american fish: possible plan is: 5 Angle fish, breeding pair of dwarf rams, shoal of congo tertas, shoal of cories and ottos. Im unsure whether another sholing fish would fit in too? any suggestions? I havn't rushed into getting my fish yet hense feeding the bacteria on a little bit of fish food so far.

thanks,
DT

Abit slow due to the bank holiday weekend however here is an updated pic of my aquarium so far. Went out on Sunday 26th and bought some more plants (far left) as well as some crypt (very young plant far right).

I also decided to move my 4 buenos aires tetra's from the small tank in the kitchen to this tank to help cycle t rather than buy new young fish. They seem very happy with the new tank size :)

Still a little brown algae on some of the swords and rocks however just brushing it off, doing regular waterchanges, reduced the hours the lighting is on and monitoring the water quality with an API Freshwater Master Test kit: tested today -  Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 20ppm

That looks really good - I do like the really large driftwood piece you have.

You asked about another sort of shoaling fish? You're planning on a good mix of middle and bottom fish, so how about a surface shoaler, say the Bloodfin Tetra (link (http://www.thinkfish.co.uk/fish/bloodfin-tetra.html)) or Penguin Tetra (link (http://www.thinkfish.co.uk/fish/penguin-tetra.html))?

I have an Aquaone Cube 40 as well and, although the filtration is huge, the lack of 'elbow room' for the fish is a bit limiting so I'm always thinking of a larger tank. (Note to self: must finish the decorating first!!)

Hey Colin,

Thanks for the reply :D I had a look at the two fish suggestions and also noticed the Silver Hatchet (south america) as a possibility? Do you know if these guys shoal or do their own thing?

I didn't have to worry about re-decorating, just had to relocate the computer desk to another room to make space for the tank!

Update for the tank- went to local mha store today and bought 4 Lake Kutubu Rainbowfish. While I was looking to do an amazon bio-type I have decided to stray from it a little. I was looking at Congo tetra's however the colour of the rainbow fish stands out far more and is certianly attractive! I am still planning on angle fish for the main 'centre piece'.

I have tried to take a few photos but they don't stay still for long ...

Good lookin' fish!

The hatchet fish are shoalers - and very good at jumping out of the tank, too. They had some at my local MA as well as Marbled Hatchetfish (link (http://www.thinkfish.co.uk/fish/marbled-hatchetfish.html)) which I think looked cooler.

Hey Resa,

Thankyou for the comments! I found myself walking round mha yesterday for an hour chosing the right fish. I have in the past made the mistake of buying fish without much thought for the future limiting my choices (not going to make that mistake again). I have spent so many evenings over the last few weeks looking at youtube videos and aquascape websites to get inspired for my tank design.

I will keep the photos coming :) My rainbows were flaring up bright orange across their heads this morning, looked amazing!!!! I will try and photograph this however its not very easy as they move before my camera can focus.

Colin: I had a look yesterday for marbled hatchet fish at mha however didn't have any in at the moment, will keep an eye out for them. The store has an order of fish in on tuesday so may come in then.

Now im off to enjoy the sunny weather! :)

Had abit of a change around with some plants today. The Bolbitus heudelotii didn't do too well as the buenos aires tetras have decided they like eating it to the point of no return. So ive changed it for some java fern instead which should hopefully not get eaten to the same extent :)

Hey Gaynor,

Thank you for the comments, you might not be able to tell from the picture however the drift wood also creates a couple of caves on the left side which is cool. I hope to encourage some rams in the future to breed in the caves :) im due to go on holiday from friday until next sunday so I have left some instructions to my family to look after the tank and keep it clean etc.... i really hope its not covered in brown algae when i return!!

I'm in the same boat Daniel, off for a weeks holiday on the 29th of this month, leaving the tank and it's occupants in the care of my brother and daughter.  I'm actually scared of going away with the tank cycling, but I will be leaving in depth instructions, and I just pray that they phone if there are problems.   :)

So yesterday I went to MHA and bought 4 panda garra's for my 200L tank, they have settled in well and algae is being eaten like no tomorrow! :)

Sad news while away on holiday my 60L suffered a loss of my betta fish and 3 otto's when I came back there was nothing obviously wrong with the water quality :( All seem fine now and keeping a close eye. I can't be mad at my lil bro who was left in charge as he did keep all alive in the 200L and did water changes on the days instructed :)

Pics of the panda garras to follow soon!

Hi Daniel,

Sorry to hear about your holiday fatalities...had you had your otos long? I always worry if I am looking after anyones pets, sod's law, something happens to them while their owners are away. I'm babysitting a friends canary at the moment, and I dread something happening to him. Mind you, he's in more danger from my son than anything else! He wakes him at the crack of dawn singing his socks off.....and man!..is he loud! ;D The canary, that is.....not my son.....though, on thinking about it..... ;)

What are panda garras?

Hi Resa,

I had the otto's for about 2months or so, I have one loan survivour at the moment. Im leaving the tank to settle before I add a couple new otto's for company.

The Panda Garra is a sucker mouth loach, have a look on Google/you tube. I was shown them a few weeks ago at MHA and after some research decided to get them instead of a dwarf pleco.

Post by: Resa on June 23, 2013, 09:06:32 PM
Hi Daniel,

The reason I asked about how long you had had your otos is, they are apparently notoriously difficult to keep, and often die before you have had them a month :( . If you make it past that, it should be ok, but perhaps your little guys just held on longer. I bought 3 originally, and lost one just after the first month. The other two seem fine, in fact, one is SO fat, he really should think about weightwatchers ;)
It is to do with their care at the time of their capture and/or during their transportation. If they are not fed properly they become unable to eat again, no matter how much food is made available to them, so sadly, they starve. So, that is why they usually die in around a month.
Also, do you have enough algae in your tank to sustain them? Because my tank was new, I have supplemented them with algae wafers and flakes. I think I have enough algae now though. I only clean the front side of my tank and leave the other walls, so that there are plenty of sucky surfaces for them.

Anyway, I shall google your panda garra....I'm intrigued...

Hey Resa,

yeh there was algae in the tank, they made a great clean up crew along side the cories and shrimp. Algae is starting to creep back so I have noticed the difference being 3 ottos down. They were suplimented with algae wafers and blood worm. I hear they don't have a great time being transported etc so was rather sad to see them die :( The tank seems ok at this moment in time but keeping a close eye.

On a different note, I am planning on getting angel fish in the 200L and have read lots of different guidance on how many would suit my tank size 100cm x 40cm x 50cm? I was thinking 2 pairs? any advice please!?

Hi both  :)

Quickly butting in......

Otos dont need just any old algae. Its brown algae thats important in their diet. I never clean all the glass in one go in my tank. I clean the front every week, along with the parts that can be seen/need doing on the back. I rarely do the side panels but when I do, I leave the back untouched until the following week. I too supplement with Algae Wafers.

Also, Otos can die for no apparant reason at any time. Ive had 4 healthy specimens for 3 years. One suddenly died only a couple of weeks ago  :'(

Anyone know their guestimated lifespan in home aquariums?

I'm a fishy down today...I found one of my original blue marble platy girls dead yesterday evening....very sad..I liked her, I only have one of my original three left now. She was very pregnant (again), perhaps she was worn out from all these babies...is that even possible, I wonder?

You also need to be aware that there are a pretty large number of different species that all go under the name of 'Oto'.  This data may, or may not be species dependent.

Hi Resa  :)

Otos are lovely fish, such a shame the way they're treated  :-\

By the way, my understanding is that the first three months are the "do or die" period (not the one month you've read somewhere?) I cant remember where I got the 3 months from. It may have been Sue, or Don, in which case I'd be inclined to go with it! If it was elsewhere, then maybe someone was erring on the side of caution by giving the longer period? Maybe somone can clear this one up for us?

When I first got mine, they were so happy in their new home that I witnessed them spawning several times  ;D I pinched off two plant leaves with their eggs, popping the leaves in a floating fry trap. Incredible to see the tiny weenie eggs develop a little bit each day then finally hatch. The fry were sooooo small they slipped through the slats of the trap into the big wide world. Every so often I'd spot one in the tank. Occasionally I'd spot two at the same time. The last time I saw one, it would have been about 8 weeks old. It was on the front glass of the tank, a gigantic molly came up to it and it frantically swam off into the thick vallis. The molly didnt get it on that occasion, but I never saw either of them again. Still a lovely Oto story though!

Sorry to hear about your platy. Its never nice to find a dead fish in your tank. I dont know if its possible for her to have been so worn out from so many babies. Ive joked many times that Im glad Im not a molly!  :o

Just a quick update on the project so far. Fish and Plants seem to be doing well, I added some java moss recently too.

My plan for this weekend is to head to my local MHA and purchase 1 angel fish as a centre piece along with either two pairs OR a trio and a pair of dwarf cichlids. Any ideas and thoughts are welcome on this stocking plan :) Will updade with photos after!

So after a 'quick' (hour and a half) visit to my local MHA I have returned with some exiting purchases!

For the 200L I have a know breeding trio of Lake Tebera Rainbowfish (1m 2f) and 3 glass catfish as abit of an oddball :)

For my 55L Aqua nano aquarium 3 Endlers ( due to loosing my beta recently the tank needed some colour)

I was planning on a combo of 1 angel and 2 pairs of dwarf cichlids however with the uncertainty of agression when breeding and seeing the beautiful colours of the rainbows my mind was swayed to the purchases above. Pictures to follow soon!!!  :D

Next photo: one of the glass catfish - they are hiding a little and I intend to get another 3 to boost their numbers next week. Didn't add 6 this week as didn't want to overload the filter.

Hi Resa,

Thanks for the comment. I use a bridge camera for the pics, seems to do a good job however takes alot of playing about with on Paint to get the KB size down to less than 700. More pics to follow as they settle in!! Also will post some of the Endlers in the Aquanano 40 - 55L when they stay still long enough!

Hi All,

Ive attached a pic of my whole setup :) I plan to add 3 more glass catfish to boot their group size to 6 next weekend and possibly add some cories to have a little bit more movement around the substrate. Any ideas for stocking/planting etc please feel free to comment :)

More pics to come as and when the fish stay still long enough! :p

Update to the tank today:

Added 3 more glass catfish bringing the group size up to 6 now, hopefully will see them a little bit more as they gain some confidence :)and bought 2 asassin snails too.

The pants are growing nicely and algae is reducing which is always a bonus!

That tank looks really good, Daniel.

My only comment would be about the Amazon Swords. I (foolishly) had one in my 40cm cube and it grew too big after about 4 months..... so I pulled it out! The root system was huge and disrupted most of my gravel, cusing chaos with everything else. Just a thought :)

Hi Colin,

Thank you for the comment,

I also had a similar experience. The Amazon Sword (far right) was in a 40L tank and like yours over grew. When I took it out to put it in the 200L tank I also made a big mess too. The root system spread to most corners in the tank!

Im hoping so get a better view of my glass catfish using the LED.

What to the fish make of it?

Well I asked each one in turn for their opinion ..... :p

The main difference I see is the glass catfish come out! :D The photo doesn't show it but the ripple effect from the water movement looks awsome under the LED's

Hi All,

Exiting day today, spent over an hour at mha and only noticed the time when they started turing lights off and shutting the doors :p woops however I did make some purchases which means more photos to follow soon!

I bought 6 dwarf gouramies (red/blue colour) and 1 ghost knife fish.

Before anyone panics I am fully aware that the ghost will grow to arround 50cm and do plan within the next couple of years to have a 6-8ft tank to home it in (if it hopefully lasts that long) I say 'it' cause I have no idea if it's a he or she?

My glass catfish look rather confused seeing a 'similar' black version of them swimming about :)

The tank overall is looking very healthy and balanced and im not planning on adding any more fish now.

Pics to follow soon!

Hey Gaynor and Resa,

Thank you for the kind comments :)

The new fish from the weekend have settled in well, just finished feeding time ... it was a blur of colour as they all darted around chasing flakes! Even the glass catfish were out for some of the action!

I seem to find myself spending more time looking at my tank and looking on the forum than watching TV nowdays  :P

Will try and get some pics of my ghost knife when he stays still for long enough!

Hi DJT,

I spend so-ooo much time watching my tank, I don't get everything else done that I should :-[ Coupled with forum time....how DOES that slip by so quickly???
Still, I guess there's worse habits to have ???

Looking forward to the piccies :)

Finally managed to get a few pics of my black ghost knife. I tried some lettuce for the fish and the ghost knife enjoyed it too ... Also we have named him/her Ripple :)

Update on the tank as a whole ... sadly I lost 1 cory to an unknown reason however I now have 2more cories in isolation for possible fin rot; so they are being treated and I belive I acted quick enough so it hasn't effected any of the others.

My 2 baby rainbow fish are growing fast, approx the size of young neons now!  :D They are in their own tank so they arn't eaten by any other fish.

So its been a while since I did an update on the 200L tank....

I have suffered some losses sadly since August, 5 out of 6 dwarf gouramies passed away along with 5/6 cories.

However latest new residents include 1 african butterfly fish and 2 angel fish (m and f)

Making the current stocking:

1 Black Ghost Knife
1 African Butterfly fish
1 lone cory and 1 dwarf gouramie (both soon to move into the 55L)
4 Panda Garra
6 Glass Catfish
3 Lake Tebera Rainbowfish (1m 2f) - (two babies from June are doing well in the other 45L tank!)
4 buenos aires tetra's (over 8 years old now!)
4 Lake Kutubu Rainbowfish
2 Angel fish (1m 1f)

I will try to get some pics up soon (plants inc the amazon swords have grown alot!) :)

Hi DJT

Have you seen that AquaOne are releasing a new AquaNano 60 (100litres) in April. (Here (http://www.aquaone.co.uk/aquanano.php)) I know we both have a 40, and I'm sorely tempted by the new 60. They've also introduced new cabinets for the whole AquaNano range.

The usual rubbish photo...

I realised today that I have had my tank a year now! Times flown by indeed and yesterday I decided to change things up a little. I've added a piece of Azalea root (soaked before added and weighted with rocks currently) and tied some Java moss onto it for now, I've also added 3 bunches of Echinodorus Red Devil which I hope the Buenos Aires Tetras don't start destroying!
