  • Do we look after fish, or the water they're in?

Great photo. I added 7 black neons to my tank yesterday. They are great fun, patrolling the upper level in a shoal. They seem to have settled in really quickly. I hope yours are doing as well as mine

They are indeed doing well.  The one I snapped was at the time suffering with a case of "long poo", which cleared up within a day.  Probably ate too much, so I've cut the level down a bit.  The other residents haven't been showing similar symptoms, so likely just a isolated incident.

Long Poo?  Is this something to be aware of then?  Does it mean they're poorly?

It's an affliction that is quite commonly caused by the fish eating too much too quickly, or if they suffer from a bit of constipation, wrong type of food. There are more sinister reasons, such as internal parasites, but I had no reason to suspect this was the case.  I had popped in some squished pea, but nobody touched them.  I cut down the level of food as a precaution and waited a day.  Any longer than that and I would have been worried, but as it was everything cleared up nicely.

Long poo is a problem when the poo is thin, white, stringy and trails for a long time. This is often internal parasites like those that I got free with my platies from the LFS almost a year ago. >:(

I've become quite an observer of platy poo! :P

Ok.... I think I have a fishy poo problem reading these comments. I have no idea what fish poo normally looks like never having fish before, and since my fish have always had poo like this I assumed it was normal.... Going to post over in Fish Health too, but if my fish fit these descriptions what should I do? Do I have a big problem? It makes me suspicious especially since Madge died :-(

Apparently a dose of live daphnia can help with stringy poo. I don't have any scientific evidence to back this up but it has worked for me, it might have been coincidence. Others may know better
