So cute.

It makes a change seeing a mother fish looking after her fry, rather than trying to eat them!!!

I've been so pleased with this whole process and it's been great to share it with the membership here.

The thing is, it's never been about breeding Apistos really.

I just wanted to reward my female Apisto for her perseverance in the community tank.

Every fortnight without fail, my female Apisto would lay eggs in her Coconut nest and yet every time the eggs would be eaten.

When she's guarding eggs she's in her prime, bright yellow and active and healthy-looking.

So, I decided I would reward her by setting up a breeding tank.

For the last few weeks now, she's guarded eggs in her coconut nest and raised fry safe in the knowledge they can't be eaten by other aggressors.

In a couple of weeks I'll take out the surviving Apisto babies and sell them to my LFS and I'll return the female back to the community tank.

I've been watching with interest too. When my cockatoos spawned in isolation, the fry were only 3 days old when the tank started leaking. The mother went back into the main tank and the babies on their own into the QT. I never got to see parental behaviour for longer than that  :'(
