Title: Amazing and awesome fishtanks
Post by: Paddyc on March 10, 2016, 08:53:34 PM
I had an idea about starting a thread showing pictures/info on amazing fish tanks that you know of/have visited/would like to visit someday.

The most impressive one I have visited is the Dubai Mall Fish Tank.

From Wikipedia... The Mall's Dubai Aquarium and Discovery Centre, developed and operated by Oceanis Australia Group, having one of the world's largest Acrylic Panels (32.88 m wide × 8.3 m high × 750 mm thick and weighing 245,614 kg). Its 750 mm thick acrylic viewing panel can withstand pressure of 10 million litres of water used in the aquarium, but its transparency gives visitors clear views of over 33,000 marine animals on display. In February 2010, a leak in the aquarium caused a partial evacuation and brief shutdown of a portion of the mall.

I didn't pay the extortionate charges to go through the tunnel or the even more ridiculous charge to go scuba diving in it (which I would have loved but simply couldn't afford) but just to stand next to it is a thrill.

This chap seems to have some of the best aquriums I've seen. But he was the "God" of aquascaping:

I know! Those pics you had of the Dubai Aquaruim look great. We have the Sea Life Centre down here in Dorset that has a similar (if not so fancy) walk through aquarium! I love it all, big and small.  :)

Ahhh Takashi Amano, his aquascapes were something else. Such a pity we lost him a few months ago.

Although I haven't visited an aquarium since taking up tropical fishkeeping, and I may feel differently now, but I have tended to feel slightly disappointed after visiting aquariums in the UK in the past. Thanks for the tip-off about the Dorset one. May need to plan future holidays around good aquarium sites.  :)

It's good but avoid peak times and I've been on a school trip with my kids and I imagine the experience for the other entrants was not so pleasant (kids running amok :vcross:). The attraction is a rescue and rebab centre for marine wildlife but it's not a charity as I believe the people that own Madam Taussaudes in London own them too along with some other attractions across the UK. The entry fee is very high but our local paper has deals every year for family tickets or single entry if you collect half a dozen tokens. Usually at least 50% off and can be a lot more.  :)

Yes Sue, Takashi Amano was the master, just incredible.

I've watched quite a few videos of Takashi Amano creating his aquascapes, the guy was an artistic genius!

But how many fish did Amano have in his tanks?? Hardly any.

Probably under stocked, however that's not necessarily a problem. But if you look at the video I posted of the Lisbon Aquarium there are lots of small fish in a almighty big aquarium. I happen to like the look of it, it's very natural looking.

It's very difficult to maintain both a "normal" number of fish and an aquascaped look to a tank. Most aquascaped tanks are taken apart and replanted after a year or so, to a different design.
The aim of Amano etc., was/is to produce something that looks like a landscape, with the shape of the plants creating the equivalent of hills, woods etc. While this may look "natural" it does not in any way resemble the actual habitat of any fish, the bottom of a pond or stream, which is usually pretty messy and looks nothing like a "designer" aquarium.

That is as maybe but. Planted  aquascaped tanks may be going for that look you're talking about. But if you take a look at the 'Lisbon video' I posted it's a recreation of an underwater environment and to be fair we're all generally unable to recreate the actual habitat as we're trying to balance the water quality in a tank environment. Having a "pretty messy" tank wouldn't really work in the long term. :fishy1:
